    What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

    Transponder Codes

    Like its name suggests, a transponder sends out an encoded signal containing an eight-digit number code whenever it is questioned by air traffic control. It is also used to transmit an exact message to air traffic control in the situation of an emergency, or to alert air traffic controllers to changes in weather conditions.
