    In preclinical studies, ischemia-reperfusion injury and older donor age are associated with graft inflammation in the early phase after transplantation. In human kidney transplantation, impaired allograft function in the first days after transplantation is often adjudicated to donor- and procedure-related characteristics, such as donor age, donor type, and ischemia times.

    In a cohort of 984 kidney recipients, 329 indication biopsies were performed within the first 14 days after transplantation. The histologic picture of these biopsies and its relationship with alloimmune risk factors and donor- and procedure-related characteristics were studied, as well as the association with graft failure. Multivariable Cox models were applied to quantify the cause-specific hazard ratios for early rejection and early inflammatory scores, adjusted for potential confounders. For quantification of hazard ratios of early events for death-censored graft failure, landmark analyses starting from day 15 were used.

    Indication biopsies performed early after kidney transplantation display inflammatory changes related to alloimmune risk factors. Nonimmune risk factors for ischemia-reperfusion injury, such as cold and warm ischemia time, older donor age, and donor type, were not identified as strong risk factors for early inflammation after human kidney transplantation.Treatments to elevate high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels in plasma have decreased cerebrovascular amyloid -β (Aβ) deposition and mitigated cognitive decline in Alzheimer disease (AD) transgenic mice. Since the major protein component of HDL particles, apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA-I), has very low permeability at the blood-brain barrier (BBB), we investigated 4F, an 18-amino-acid ApoA-I/HDL mimetic peptide, as a therapeutic alternative. Specifically, we examined the BBB permeability of 4F and its effects on [125I]Aβ trafficking from brain to blood and from blood to brain. After systemic injection in mice, the BBB permeability of [125I]4F, estimated as the permeability-surface area (PS) product, ranged between 2 and 5 × 10-6 ml/g per second in various brain regions. The PS products of [125I]4F were ∼1000-fold higher compared with those determined for [125I]ApoA-I. Moreover, systemic infusion with 4F increased the brain efflux of intracerebrally injected [125I]Aβ42. Conversely, 4F infusion decreased the brain infnd also decreased its brain influx, as evaluated in mice and in blood-brain barrier cell monolayers. Thus, 4F represents a potential therapeutic strategy to mitigate brain amyloid accumulation in cerebral amyloid angiopathy and Alzheimer disease.The end of the reproductive phase in monocarpic plants is determined by a coordinated arrest of all active meristems, a process known as global proliferative arrest (GPA). GPA is linked to the correlative control exerted by developing seeds and, possibly, the establishment of strong source-sink relationships. It has been proposed that the meristems that undergo arrest at the end of the reproductive phase behave at the transcriptomic level as dormant meristems, with low mitotic activity and high expression of abscisic acid response genes. Meristem arrest is also controlled genetically. In Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), the MADS-box transcription factor FRUITFULL induces GPA by directly repressing genes of the APETALA2 (AP2) clade. The AP2 genes maintain shoot apical meristem (SAM) activity in part by keeping WUSCHEL expression active, but the mechanisms downstream of this pathway remain elusive. To identify target genes, we performed a transcriptomic analysis, inducing AP2 activity in meristems close to arrest. Our results suggest that AP2 controls meristem arrest by repressing genes related to axillary bud dormancy in the SAM and negative regulators of cytokinin signaling. In addition, our analysis indicates that genes involved in the response to environmental signals also respond to AP2, suggesting that it could modulate the end of flowering by controlling responses to both endogenous and exogenous signals. Our results support the previous observation that at the end of the reproductive phase the arrested SAM behaves as a dormant meristem, and they strongly support AP2 as a master regulator of this process.Relative ecotoxicity of approved neonicotinoids (i.e. imidacloprid, clothianidin, acetamiprid, thiacloprid, thiamethoxam and dinotefuran) and diamides (i.e. chlorantraniliprole, cyantraniliprole and flubendiamide) was examined on population growth parameters of Zygogramma bicolorata Pallister on parthenium under laboratory conditions at 27 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 5% relative humidity and 10 L 14D photoperiod. The dose of all tested insecticides in the bioassay procedure was within a minimum range of their recommended field rate. In acute toxicity trial, imidacloprid caused highest rate of mortality in treated adults of Z. bicolorata, however, it was lowest in flubendiamide treatment followed by cyantraniliprole and chlorantraniliprole. Further, based on toxicity coefficient (E) value in acute toxicity trial, all were classified as harmful (H) and diamides were classified as moderately harmful (MH) as per IOBC classification. Moreover, chronic toxicity trials were carried out through life table response experiments (LTREs) in the F1 progeny of acute toxicity experienced group. Prolonged development with the highest mortality was evident in as compared to diamides. Furthermore, population growth parameters i.e. potential fecundity (Pf), natality rate (mx), intrinsic rate of increase (rm), net reproductive rate (R0) and finite rate of increase (λ) was greatly reduced in Z. bicolorata treated with neonicotinoids as compared with diamides. However, mean generation time (Tc), corrected generation time (τ) and the doubling time (DT) was prolonged in neonicotinoids followed by diamides. Furthermore, proportion of females was greatly reduced (0.43-0.48 females) in neonicotinoids as comparison to diamides (0.53-0.55 females) and control (0.67 females). On the basis of ecotoxicity trials, the tested neonicotinoids were highly toxic to Z. bicolorata than diamides. Therefore, diamide insecticides could be used with Z. bicolorata, however, for validation experimentation need to be done under natural field conditions.Gibson and Crooks (1938) argued that a 'field of safe travel’ could qualitatively explain drivers’ steering behavior on straights, curved roads, and while avoiding obstacles. This study aims to quantitatively explain driver behavior while avoiding obstacles on a straight road, and quantify the 'Driver’s Risk Field’ (DRF). In a fixed-based driving simulator, 77 (7 longitudinal and 11 lateral) positions of the obstacles were used to quantify the subjectively perceived and objectively (maximum absolute steering angle) measured DRF for eight participants. The subjective response was a numerical answer to the question „How much steering do you think you need at this moment in time?” The results show that the propagation of the width of the DRF, along the longitudinal distance, resembled an hourglass shape, and all participants responded to obstacles that were placed beyond the width of the car. This implies that the Driver’s Risk Field is wider than the car width.Micro-SWIFT SPRAY (MSS) is a 3D Lagrangian particle dispersion model that maintains a good balance between accuracy and computational cost. However, its capabilities for air dispersion modeling in the presence of both complex topography and high building densities have not been investigated for nuclear emergency response. In this study, MSS is systematically evaluated against two wind tunnel experiments that simulate a typical Chinese nuclear power plant with the above two features. The MSS predictions are compared with both 2D horizontal and vertical measurements. Sensitivity studies are performed with respect to the particle number, the lower bound of the turbulence intensity, and the horizontal and vertical grid size. The results demonstrate that ground-level predictions of both wind and radionuclide concentrations are in satisfactory agreement with the measurements under optimized parameter values. The vertical predictions exhibit site-dependent accuracy, but generally consistent tendencies. The default lower bound of the turbulence intensity in MSS may be insufficient for reproducing the correct plume width observed in the wind tunnel experiments. An increased lower bound is suggested to solve this problem. In addition, artificially high concentrations may arise near steep slopes if large horizontal/vertical grid sizes are used. Suitable parameters for preventing this problem are also provided.

    Bioceramic-containing root canal sealers are the most recently introduced sealers in endodontics. The present work reported experiments on a bioceramic-based root canal sealer with the objective of improving its physiochemical properties via reinforcement with each one of the three different nanomaterials multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTS), titanium carbide (TC) or boron nitride (BN) in two weight percentages (1wt% and 2wt%).

    Each nanomaterial was added to a definite weight of BioRoot root canal sealer (BioRoot™ RCS, Septodont, Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, France). Three composite groups of each weight percentage were prepared for evaluation BioRoot/MWCNTS, BioRoot/TC and BioRoot/BN. The initial and final setting times, solubility, elution and pH values of the freshly-mixed and set samples were evaluated and compared to pristine BioRoot™ RCS. Setting times were evaluated using Gilmore needles. Solubility and elution were determined after immersion in water for 24h. Scanning electron microscopy was used to e may be developed by incorporation of nanomaterials.To identify the seasonal variability of body-size spectrum for monitoring surveys based on periphytic protozoa, a one-year baseline survey was carried out in a coastal region of Yellow Sea, northern China. A total of 240 glass slides were collected after immersion times of 3, 7, 10, 14, 21 and 28 days in a four season cycle, i.e., winter, spring, summer, and autumn. Body-size ranks S2 and S5 dominated the periphytic protozoan communities from the initial stage (from day 3) to the next periods in spring and autumn, while body-size ranks S7, S8 and S4 showed high variety at the equilibrium stages (from day 10) in summer and winter. The expectation analysis revealed that the samples had different patterns of departure from the anticipated body-size spectrum in each season. This study shows that an ideal sampling approach needs to be established when protozoa is used as bioindicators of marine water quality.

    COVID-19 presented an unprecedented challenge for healthcare workers and systems around the world. Healthcare systems have adapted differently in terms of pandemic planning of regular services, adopting infection control measures and prioritising essential hospital services in the context of a burgeoning COVID-19 patient load and inevitable surge.

    We performed a review on current evidence and share our practices at a teaching hospital in Singapore.

    We outline principles and make recommendations for continuity of delivering essential thoracic surgical services during this current outbreak.

    The maintenance and provision of thoracic surgery services in this context requires good preplanning and vigilance to infection control measures across all levels.
