In-person safety programs for pre-kindergarten children were not able to go on in their usual way during the summer of 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While some communities opted to cancel the programs, one organization in Northwest Ohio chose to reformat it, knowing that this education is a critical introduction to lifelong safety habits. Through social media, video-taped education from community safety professionals, and activity packets given to registrants, „Safety City” was able to go on. The new format incorporated all of the childhood safety topics normally presented in the live version of the program. The efforts described here indicate that it is feasible to alter presentation formats from in-person to virtual to connect even young children with important education. As such, similar programs needing to make this transition while the world continues to adjust to pandemic precautions may benefit from understanding the strengths, limitations, and insights from the process.The COVID-19 world health crisis has profound implications for the care and education of young children in homes and schools, the lives of preservice and inservice teachers, and the work of college/university faculty. This article begins by discussing the implications of a world health pandemic for education and the challenges of conducting a literature review on such a rapidly evolving topic. The next four sections categorize the COVID-19 literature into themes (1) threats to quality of life (QoL) and wellness, (2) pressure on families and intensification of inequities, (3) changes in teaching methods and reliance on technology, and (4) restructuring of higher education and scholarship interrupted. Each of the four themes is introduced with a narrative that highlights the current context, followed by the literature review. Next is a compilation of high-quality, online resources developed by leading professional organizations to support children, families, and educators dealing with the COVID crisis. The article concludes with changes that hold the greatest potential to advance the field of early childhood education and care.Cancer is among the leading cause of death around the world, causing close to 10 million deaths each year. Significant efforts have been devoted to developing novel technologies that can detect and treat cancer early and effectively to reduce cancer recurrences, treatment costs, and mortality. Gold nanoparticles (GNP) have been given particular attention for its use with photo-induced hyperthermia coupled with novel immunotherapy methods to provide a new platform for highly selective and less invasive cancer treatment. Among the various GNP platforms, gold nanostars (GNS) have a unique star-shaped geometric structure that allows superior light absorption and photothermal heating. This photothermal effect have also been found to amplify the anti-tumor immune response and can be exploited with adjuvant treatments using immune checkpoint inhibitors. This combination treatment known as Synergistic Immuno Photo Nanotherapy (SYMPHONY) has been shown to reverse tumor-mediated immunosuppression and has led to effective and long-lasting immunity against not only primary tumors but also cancer metastasis. This overview highlights the development and applications of GNS-mediated therapy developed in our laboratory for cancer treatment. This paper also presents recent results of experimental studies to illustrate the superior performance of GNS for photothermal treatment applications.The article presents an analysis of the nature and causes of changes observed in the long economic cycles (Kondratieff waves) of global economic development of the first half of the 21st century. The forms of these modifications and the time boundaries of the current long economic cycle are defined. A reduction of the ascending wave of the long economic cycle to 15 years and an expected reduction of the descending wave to 15 years are noted. The reasons for the reduced durations of long economic cycle phases are associated with the proliferation of microelectronic information and communication technology and with the aggravation of global competition by major developing economies. Prospects for global economic dynamics in the next 30 years and possible time boundaries of the next long economic cycle are delineated.The paper analyzes and comments on the results of a regular survey of Russian enterprises in the real sector, which was conducted by the Institute of Economic Forecasting of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Information on the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the activities of domestic enterprises is provided. The opinions of enterprises on the severity of various macroeconomic problems in Russia are reflected. The data on the relations between Russian enterprises and banks are presented. The degree of demand of Russian enterprises in the modernization of production is determined. Information on purchases of domestic and foreign equipment in Russia is considered. The assessments of enterprises regarding the quality of Russian machinery and equipment are given. The data on delays in the supply of raw materials and components are presented. The opinions of enterprises on the implementation of the best available technologies (BAT) in Russia are reflected.The article develops an approach to building a model of interregional interactions based on regionalization of national input-output tables. Options for the spatial structure of gross output depending on the forecast of investments in fixed assets are presented. Five main options for the prospective spatial organization of economic development are proposed. The advantages of the scenario of locally diversified growth, which is more acceptable from the point of view of territorial justice but requiring active state regulation of spatial development, are shown.This article shows the possibility of applying short-term (fast) indicators of economic security to analyze crisis phenomena in the economy of Russia. The system includes the indicators adopted in the Strategy for the Economic Security of the Russian Federation up to 2030. It is proposed to jointly analyze these indicators through new nonlinear normalizing functions that contain their threshold and target values as parameters. The fast indicators system is used to analyze four economic crises in Russia, including their prerequisites and the pace and depth of the recession and subsequent recovery of the real economy and other sectors, such as the financial and social sectors, and foreign trade. Integral indices are synthesized for these sectors, the composite index of economic security is calculated, and the patterns of their joint movement are considered. The RTS index is singled out among the forward-looking indices that can be potential forerunners of a crisis.The article is devoted to the main directions of the development of economic analysis under the influence of a pandemic crisis. The key features of the pandemic crisis, the formation of economic dynamics in its course, and the main directions of the authorities’ response to the deterioration of the medical situation are considered. A description of the main directions of economic analysis during a pandemic crisis is given and the reasons for overestimating or underestimating the forecast estimates made at the beginning of the crisis are assessed. The possibilities of interdisciplinary research aimed at improving the quality of the authorities’ response to changes in the epidemiological situation are considered. The principles of separation of tasks of economic analysis are formulated in the framework of policy support during the coronavirus crisis.Many institutions of higher education are investing in „implicit bias training” as a mechanism to improve diversity and inclusion on their campuses. In this study, we describe an effort to implement this training in the form of a 3-hour workshop delivered to faculty members in the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Evaluation form data collected immediately post-workshop, and in-person interviews and survey data collected 6-12 months post-workshop, were used to measure the effectiveness of the intervention. These data show that faculty awareness of implicit bias in their workplace environments increased significantly, although individual motivation and self-efficacy to act without bias, and self-reported bias-reduction actions, did not increase. At the same time, we found evidence of improved department climates and bias-reduction actions at the department level, which increase our confidence that the workshops were having a positive impact. Importantly, women and faculty of color in the College did not report increases in negative behavior after the workshop, and reported that their departments were engaging in explicit discussions of potential biases in departmental processes more often. These findings support the continued implementation of the „Breaking the Bias Habit®” workshops along with measurement of their success.We present a patient suffering from a stroke with a free-floating thrombus extending up to the distal internal carotid artery. The thrombus was totally resolved after a 2-week anticoagulation regimen without leaving behind any severe residual stenosis in the carotid bulb. The optimal treatment of this rare condition remains uncertain. We report some important treatment strategies that have been used in the literature, emphasizing the anticoagulation as the mainstay of therapy. Immediate surgical and interventional manipulations carry the risk of thrombus dislodgement and embolization and should be considered if there are recurrent symptoms despite medical management.There is still no consensus on the optimal technique for performing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in ostial coronary lesions, due to potential complications. The modified flower petal technique is one of the techniques to management of ostial lesions. It seems suitable technique in terms of covering the coronary ostium well. In this report, we discuss a patient who underwent PCI with sequential modified flower petal technique, first to the left anterior descending artery ostial lesion, and then to the circumflex artery (CXA) upon the ostium of CXA was affected after the procedure following coronary angiography.Aortic diameter is a powerful predictor of adverse aortic events, such as aortic rupture or dissection, forming the basis of prophylactic surgical repair criteria. Limited evidence is available regarding the association of aortic wall thickness (AWT) with these adverse aortic events. We present the case and surgical video of a 73-year-old man with chest pain and an increased AWT, who underwent ascending aortic repair and deep hemiarch placement under deep hypothermic circulatory arrest. Surgical pathology demonstrated evidence of aortic delamination and medial separation, indicative of an impending dissection. The patient recovered uneventfully, and his chest pain ultimately resolved after open repair. In this patient, increased AWT was felt to be the precursor to a potential aortic catastrophe.Infection with the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV2, produces the clinical syndrome COVID-19. COVID-19 is a systemic illness inducing hyperinflammation and cytokine storm affecting multiple organs including the myocardium which is reflected in elevated cardiac biomarkers such as troponin, lactate dehydrogenase, and creatinine kinase MB. Furthermore, COVID-19 has been implicated in increased predilection to thromboembolic phenomena. Hence, mortality in patients with associated cardiovascular disease has been higher compared with the cohort with no cardiovascular comorbidity. It is entirely unknown how remdesivir will change the facet of cardiovascular medicine and surgery. In the present constantly changing climate, this review of remdesivir and its association with cardiovascular disease is comprehensive as of June 17, 2020 and it highlights the science behind this drug and its potential implications to cardiovascular practice.
