    Recirculating air purification technologies are employed as potential means of reducing exposure to aerosol particles and airborne viruses. Toward improved testing of recirculating air purification units, we developed and applied a medium-scale single-pass wind tunnel test to examine the size-dependent collection of particles and the collection and inactivation of viable bovine coronavirus (BCoV, a betacoronavirus), porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV, an alphacoronavirus), and influenza A virus (IAV), by a commercial air purification unit. The tested unit, the Molekule Air Mini, incorporates a MERV 16 filter as well as a photoelectrochemical oxidating layer. It was found to have a collection efficiency above 95.8% for all tested particle diameters and flow rates, with collection efficiencies above 99% for supermicrometer particles with the minimum collection efficiency for particles smaller than 100 nm. For all three tested viruses, the physical tracer-based log reduction was near 2.0 (99% removal). Conversely, the viable virus log reductions were found to be near 4.0 for IAV, 3.0 for BCoV, and 2.5 for PRCV, suggesting additional inactivation in a virus family- and genus-specific manner. In total, this work describes a suite of test methods which can be used to rigorously evaluate the efficacy of recirculating air purification technologies.

    Examine beliefs about EBP and its level of implementation among nurses working in nursing homes in a bilingual canton of Switzerland and explore associations between these aspects and nurses’ sociodemographic and professional characteristics.

    Although evidence-based practice (EBP) is recognised as an effective strategy for improving the quality and safety of care, little is known about its use in nursing homes. Nurses’ beliefs about EBP and their implementation of it in Switzerland’s nursing homes have never been explored.

    Beliefs about and implementation of EBP were evaluated using validated French- and German-language versions of the EBP Beliefs Scale and the EBP Implementation Scale, developed by Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt (Melnyk, Fineout-Overholt, & Mays, 2008, Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing, 5, 208). The STROBE checklist for cross-sectional studies was used in reporting this study.

However, high-resolution vertical changes of benthic microbial diversity and co-occurrence patterns are poorly described. The ecological contributions of abundant and rare species in sediments also remain largely unknown. Here, by analysing microbial populations at 14 depth layers of 10 subseafloor sediment cores (water depth 1,250-3,530 m) obtained in the South China Sea, we provided the vertical profiles of microbial β-diversity and co-occurrence influenced by subcommunities of different abundance. These 134 sediment samples were clustered into four groups according to sediment depth (1-2, 6-10, 30-90 and 190-790 cm) with obvious shifts in microbial community compositions. The vertical succession of microorganisms was consistent with redox zonation and influenced by terrestrial inputs. Partitioning of vertical β-diversity showed extremely high species replacement between deep layers and the surface layer, indicating selection-induced loss of rare species and dispersal of dormant cells and spores. By contrast, for horizontal β-diversity, richness of rare species became increasingly significant in deep sediments. Accompanying this β-diversity profile were clear changes in the association pattern, with microorganisms being less connected in deeper sediment layers, probably reflecting reduced syntrophic interactions. Rare species accounted for an indispensable proportion in the co-occurrence network, and tended to form complex „small worlds.” The rare subcommunity also responded differently to various environmental factors compared with the abundant subcommunity. Our findings expand current knowledge on vertical changes of marine benthic microbial diversity and their association patterns, emphasizing the potential roles of rare species.

    Epilepsy is the most common chronic neurological disease in dogs that adversely affects the quality of life (QoL) of affected dogs and their owners. Research on epilepsy in dogs is expanding internationally, but where best to focus limited research time, funds, and expertise to achieve better outcomes for affected dogs and their owners has not been studied.

    To explore idiopathic epilepsy (IE) research priorities of owners of dogs with IE, general practice veterinarians, and veterinary neurologists.

    An international online survey was conducted in 2016 and repeated in 2020. Participants rated the absolute importance and relative rank of 18 areas of IE research, which were compared between groups and time points.

    Valid responses were received from 414 respondents in 2016 and 414 respondents in 2020. The development of new anti-seizure drugs (ASD) and improving the existing ASD management were considered the most important research priorities. Areas of research with increasing priority between 2016 and 2020 included non-ASD management, with the greatest potential seen in behavioral and dietary-based interventions. Disagreements in priorities were identified between groups; owners prioritized issues that impacted their and their dog’s QoL, for example, adverse effects and comorbidities, whereas general practitioner vets and neurologists prioritized clinical issues and longer-term strategies to manage or prevent IE, respectively.

    Ensuring that voices of owners are heard in the planning of future research should be a broader goal of veterinary medicine, to target research efforts toward areas most likely to improve the QoL of the dog-owner dyad.

    Urolithiasis is a common and often recurrent problem in dogs.

    To evaluate trends in urolith composition in dogs and to assess risk factors for urolithiasis, including age, breed, sex, neuter status, urolith location, and bacterial urolith cultures.

    A total of 10 444 uroliths and the dogs from which they were obtained.

    The laboratory database at the UC Davis Gerald V. Ling Urinary Stone Analysis Laboratory was searched for all urolith submissions from dogs between January 2006 and December 2018. Mineral type, age, breed, sex, neuter status, urolith location, and urolith culture were recorded. Trends were evaluated and variables compared to evaluate risk factors.

    Calcium oxalate (CaOx) and struvite-containing uroliths comprised the majority of all submissions from dogs, representing 47.0% and 43.6%, respectively. The proportion of CaOx-containing uroliths significantly decreased from 49.5% in 2006 to 41.8% in 2018 (P = .006), with no change in the proportion of struvite-containing urolith submissions. Cystine-containing uroliths comprised 2.7% of all submissions between 2006 and 2018 and a significant nonlinear increase in this mineral type occurred over time (1.4% of all submissions in 2006 to 8.7% in 2018; P < .001). Of all cystine-containing uroliths, 70.3% were from intact male dogs. Age, breed, and sex predispositions for uroliths were similar to those previously identified.

    Real-world data from large administrative claims databases in Japan have recently become available, but limited evidence exists to support their validity. VALIDATE-J validated claims-based algorithms for selected cancers in Japan.

    VALIDATE-J was a multicenter, cross-sectional, retrospective study. Disease-identifying algorithms were used to identify cancers diagnosed between January or March 2012 and December 2016 using claims data from two hospitals in Japan. Positive predictive values (PPVs), specificity, and sensitivity were calculated for prevalent (regardless of baseline cancer-free period) and incident (12-month cancer-free period; with claims and registry periods in the same month) cases, using hospital cancer registry data as gold standard.

    22 108 cancers were identified in the hospital claims databases. PPVs (number of registry cases) for prevalent/incident cases were any malignancy 79.0% (25 934)/73.1% (18 119); colorectal 84.4% (3519)/65.6% (2340); gastric 87.4% (3534)/76.8% (2279); lung 88.1cies using Japanese claims data. Use of claims-based algorithms will enable identification of patient populations from claims databases, while avoiding direct patient identification. Further research is needed to confirm the generalizability of our results and applicability to specific subgroups of patient populations.

    To examine the validity of International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, (ICD-10) code-based algorithms for herpes zoster (HZ) in the electronic medical record (EMR) of a large, integrated pediatric healthcare network and to examine baseline demographics and chronic comorbidities associated with HZ in a representative pediatric population.

    We reviewed the electronic charts of all patients with a single ICD-10 for HZ (B02.xx) as their primary or secondary diagnosis in the EMR of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) healthcare network from January 2010-March 2019. The positive predictive value (PPV) for a single code for HZ was calculated and alternative algorithms were examined to determine which method resulted in the highest PPV.

    The PPV for a single ICD-10 code was 91.7% (95% CI 80.8-95.4) for definitive and/or probable cases of HZ and 63.9% (95% CI 53.4%-75.5%) for definitive cases alone. Adding a prescription for an antiviral did not improve the PPV. However, adding a new code for rash entered within 1week of the HZ code increased the PPV to 100% for definitive and/or probable cases but with substantial loss of sensitivity. A high proportion of children with HZ who required inpatient hospitalization had chronic disease (70%) and were on systemic immunomodulatory therapy (50%).

    HZ can be identified with a high PPV in electronic medical records of children using ICD-10 code alone. These findings lay the foundation for future pharmacoepidemiologic research to better understand risk factors for HZ infection.
