Epiploic appendicitis is an uncommon and self-limiting disease. In this report, we aimed to present two patients with epiploic appendicitis.Diabetic amyotrophy is a rare condition in which patients develop severe aching or burning pain in hips and thighs. This is followed by weakness and wasting of the muscles of proximal lower extremities, which often occur asymmetrically. Diabetic neuropathic cachexia is a different type of diabetic neuropathies. It leads to intense pain in affected extremities accompained by anorexia, weight loss as well as mood and sleep disturbances. A 42-year-old type 2 diabetic woman with a known poor glycemic control presented with loss of appetite, and weight (approximately 15 kg), severe burning sensation over her lower limbs, depression and sleep disturbances for 3 months. Symmetric wasting was noted in her proximal lower extremities with bilateral muscle weakness. Her patella and Achilles reflexes were absent with decrease in her upper extremity reflexes. We evaluated the patient as diabetic amyotrophy associated with diabetic neuropathic cachexia based on clinical signs, electrophysiological and radiological examination findings. Physicians should take into consideration these rare complications of diabetes mellitus showing characteristics different from other types of neuropathies.Neurofibromatosis is an autosomal dominant disease that is characterized by cutaneous hyperpigmentation and multiple neurofibromas and often accompanied by localized peripheral and central neural tumors. Gastrointestinal involvement is seen in 25% of the cases. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors, pancreatic and duodenal neuroendocrine tumors are the most common tumors in patients with neurofibromatosis. Neurofibromatosis and gastric adenocarcinoma constitute an extremely rare combination. In this case report we aim to present a patient with neurofibromatosis operated due to gastric adenocarcinoma.Adult onset Still’s disease is a rare systemic inflammatory disorder. At the onset of the disease sore throat, pharyngitis; which does not respond to antibiotics, one or two times peaking febrile episodes, marked salmon-colored rash on the trunk and extremities, arthralgia, arthritis, myalgia, fatigue, loss of appetite with nausea and weight loss; hepatosplenomegaly and lymphadenopathy can be seen. Among laboratory examinations levels of ferritin and other acute phase reactants distinctly rise, and neutrophilic leukocytosis; ANA and RF negativity are detected. Pleural and pericardial effusions, transient pulmonary infiltration, and rarely myocarditis can be seen during the course of the disease. Here we report a patient who was examined for fever of unknown origin and diagnosed with adult onset Still’s disease which is a rare etiology of pleural effusion.Human body is an intermediate host for Echinococcus granulosus which is a cestode causing hydatid disease. The most common type is E. Granulosus. E. Granulosus most often affects the liver and the lung. Primary subcutaneous cyst hydatid without involving other organs is extremely rare. A 60-year-old Turkish woman came to our hospital with a growing mass in the left periumblical region of the abdominal wall. In the superficial tissue ultrasonography a cystic mass measuring 3×2 cm was detected in the subcutaneous tissue of left periumblical region of the abdominal wall and it was doubtful for hydatid cyst. The patient had no history of surgery for a hydatid cyst in any other organ and the hydatid serology was negative. The cyst was surgically, and carefully excised. Macroscopic exploration suggested a hydatid cyst with its germinative membrane and the histopathological examination of the specimen was reported as a hydatid cyst. Hydatid cyst should be considered when a subcutaneous cytic mass is detected in a patient living in the region where the disease is endemic. The best treatment is complete removal of the cysts.

The objective of this study is to investigate the validity and the reliability of Birth Satisfaction Scale (BSS) and to adapt it into the Turkish language. This scale is used for measuring maternal satisfaction with birth in order to evaluate women’s birth perceptions.

In this study there were 150 women who attended to inpatient postpartum clinic. The participants filled in an information form and the BSS questionnaire forms. The properties of the scale were tested by conducting reliability and validation analyses.

BSS entails 30 Likert-type questions. It was developed by Hollins Martin and Fleming. Total scale scores ranged between 30-150 points. Higher scores from the scale mean increases in birth satisfaction. Three overarching themes were identified in Scale service provision (home assessment, birth environment, support, relationships with health care professionals); personal attributes (ability to cope during labour, feeling in control, childbirth preparation, relationship with baby); and stress experienced during labour (distress, obstetric injuries, receiving sufficient medical care, obstetric intervention, pain, prolonged labour and baby’s health). Cronbach’s alfa coefficient was 0.62.

According to the present study, BSS entails 30 Likert-type questions and evaluates women’s birth perceptions. The Turkish version of BSS has been proven to be a valid and a reliable scale.

Postnatal care is an important issue in maintaining and promoting maternal and neonatal health. However, utilization of postpartum maternal health care services is at a low rate in many countries. This study was aimed to investigate the impact of integrated obstetric and neonatal services on utilization rates of postnatal health care service among mothers.

This study was performed among a total of 4193 mothers who gave birth at Maternity Unit of Golcuk Necati Celik State Hospital of Kocaeli Province between 2010 and 2013. All mothers were called back to postnatal care clinic (PNC) for newborn hearing test (NHT) screenings, neonatal and maternal care within two weeks after delivery. The deliveries after, (n=3093) and before (n=1100) utilization of integrated services were compared as for postnatal service utilization rates.

Utilization rates of neonatal health care, NHT and postpartum maternal health care services significantly increased after implementation of integrated services (p<0.0001). Especially maternal service utilization rates increased from 34% to 99 percent.

Integration of newborn and maternal health care services as a unit increases the utilization of PNC services.

To examine the interobserver variability for fetal biometric parameters and to focus on how this variability affects the combined first-trimester screening test results.

Sixty-four singleton pregnancies who were scheduled for combined first-trimester screening were investigated. Two experienced sonographers performed all examinations at the same visit. The risk calculations of screening were performed according to the each operator’s individual ultrasonographic fetal measurements. Interobserver variability in measurements of fetal nuchal translucency (NT) and crown-rump length (CRL) and the effect of this interobserver variability on the screening results were assessed.

Interobserver reliabilities for NT and CRL were 0.687 and 0.945 (p<0.001), respectively. Interobserver reliability coefficients for trisomy 21 and trisomy 13/18 were 0.945 and 0.963 (p<0.001), respectively.

Our study demonstrated quite high interobserver reliability for CRL measurement, while interobserver agreement for NT was lower. Despite this lower reliability and agreement for NT measurement, interobserver reliability for chromosomal abnormalities was quite high.

Obesity is a growing health problem in most of the developed countries. It is associated with many chronic diseases, affecting particularly endocrine and cardiovascular systems. Inflammation plays a key role in pathophysiology of obesity. In this study, we aimed to investigate the inflammation status in obese children using neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio.

In this study 130 obese and 57 healthy children were assessed retrospectively. According to Centers for Disease Control 2000 (CDC) BMI percentiles for childhood and adulthood, 85-95 percentile was considered as overweight and >95 percentile as obese.

Lymphocyte/neutrophil ratios in the obese group were significantly higher compared to those in healthy controls (p=0.03 and p=0.045, respectively). Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and CRP level in the obese group were significantly higher compared to those in healthy controls (p=0.02 and p=0.00, respectively). Thrombocyte/lymphocyte ratios were not significantly different between two groups (p=0.156).

It is possible that childhood obesity which has been increasingly prevalent recently triggers the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis during the early years of life. Increased neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio might be associated with the severity of inflammation which plays a role in the early stages of atherosclerosis. Therefore, taking childhood obesity under control using diet and other treatment methods will prevent mortality and morbidity in the elderly.
