    Background The diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of atherosclerosis co-depression are poor, so it is urgent to explore new targets. Based on the „microbiota-gut-brain axis,” this study aimed to investigate the changes of lipid metabolites in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus regions and the characteristics of the gut microbiota in ApoE-/- mice with atherosclerosis co-depression. Methods ApoE-/- mice (hyperlipid feeding combined with binding, HFB group, n = 14, male) fed a high-fat diet for 16 weeks with binding stimulation were used as an animal model for atherosclerosis co-depression. The depression degree of mice was evaluated by body weight, sucrose preference test, open field test, and tail suspension test. Oil-red O staining, HE staining, and biochemical parameters were used to evaluate the damage degree of atherosclerosis in mice. When the relative position of the visual cues is altered, the hippocampal population exhibits heterogeneous responses and constructs context-specific spatial maps. Another critical factor that can strongly modulate spatial representation is the presence of reward. Reward features can drive behavior and are known to bias spatial attention. However, it is unclear whether reward features are used for spatial reference in the presence of distal cues and how the hippocampus population dynamics changes when the association between reward features and distal cues is altered. We systematically investigated these questions by recording place cells from the CA1 in different sets of experiments while the rats ran in an environment with the conflicting association between reward features and distal cues. We report that, when rewards features were only used as local cues, the hippocampal place fields exhibited coherent and dynamical orientation across sessions, suggesting the use of a single coherent spatial map. We found that place cells maintained their spatial offset in the cue conflict conditions, thus showing a robust spatial coupling featuring an attractor-like property in the CA1. These results indicate that reward features may control the place field orientation but may not cause sufficient input difference to create context-specific spatial maps in the CA1.The COVID-19 pandemic catalyzed the rapid dissemination of papers and preprints investigating the disease and its associated virus, SARS-CoV-2. The multifaceted nature of COVID-19 demands a multidisciplinary approach, but the urgency of the crisis combined with the need for social distancing measures present unique challenges to collaborative science. We applied a massive online open publishing approach to this problem using Manubot. Through GitHub, collaborators summarized and critiqued COVID-19 literature, creating a review manuscript. Manubot automatically compiled citation information for referenced preprints, journal publications, websites, and clinical trials. Continuous integration workflows retrieved up-to-date data from online sources nightly, regenerating some of the manuscript’s figures and statistics. Manubot rendered the manuscript into PDF, HTML, LaTeX, and DOCX outputs, immediately updating the version available online upon the integration of new content. Through this effort, we organized over 50 scientists from a range of backgrounds who evaluated over 1,500 sources and developed seven literature reviews. While many efforts from the computational community have focused on mining COVID-19 literature, our project illustrates the power of open publishing to organize both technical and non-technical scientists to aggregate and disseminate information in response to an evolving crisis.

    To evaluate undergraduate biomedical education student opinions and expectations on mentorship.

    A survey was administered to students enrolled in the undergraduate biology, neuroscience and nursing programs at a large public research-intensive university. The survey queried demographics, previous mentorship experiences, ideal qualities of mentors, benefits/value of mentorship and future plans for seeking mentorship. Survey responses were evaluated using either t-test comparisons or one-way ANOVA.

    The majority of the respondents were female and were interested in pursuing professional schools (nursing and medicine). Survey results indicate high student interest in receiving mentoring, but few were active participants in a mentoring relationship. Respondents indicated either lack of knowledge or discomfort in identifying a mentor. While faculty mentors versus peer mentors were preferred, respondents indicated that mentoring by either faculty or peers would be of value. Survey results indicate that desired benefits of mentoring included guidance in future education and career decisions, networking and career advice.

    The major conclusions are that despite high student interest in being mentored, their participation in mentoring is very low. These finding are supportive of the development of structured mentoring programs to facilitate and enhance mentoring of undergraduate STEM students and aid in their academic career progression.

Despite the progress in the understanding of this oral complication in cancer patients for the past 18 years, there is still discussion about the best way to define MRONJ, prevent the complication, how to diagnose, and the options of treatment available. The initial reports associated MRONJ to bisphosphonates and denosumab, medications that work as bone-modifying agents. Later, other agents such as the antiangiogenics, have also been reported to cause the oral complication, either alone or in combination with antiresorptives. Initially, these medications were prescribed to patients with osteoporosis and cancers patients with bone metastasis. Today, because of the effect of the medications in the bone remodeling system, patients with several other diseases such as giant cell tumors, rheumatoid arthritis, Paget’s disease of bone, fibrous dysplasia, osteogenesis imperfecta, are managed with these medications, significantly increasing the population of individuals at risk for developing MRONJ. This mini review focused on the cancer patient. It updates the dental clinician on the recent scientific literature about MRONJ and provides information on how to diagnose and manage patients being treated with these medications, suggests protocols to prevent the development of MRONJ, and present ways to manage those patients who develop the oral complication.

    Short Synacthen tests (SSTs) are expensive, dependent on Synacthen availability, and need supervision. To reduce SST testing, we examined the utility of pre-test cortisol (Cort0) and related parameters in predicting outcome.

    We retrospectively examined the following in all SSTs; (i) Cort0 (ii) indications (iii) and time and place of testing. Receiver operated characteristic (ROC) curves were devised for Cort0 to obtain the best cut-off for outcome prediction in those who had SSTs between 8 and 10 am (Group 1) and at other times (Group 2).

    Of 506 SSTs, 13 were unsuitable for analysis. 111/493 SSTs (22.5%) were abnormal. (1) ROC curves predicted – (a) SST failure with 100% specificity when Cort0 was ⩽124 nmol/L (Group 1), or ⩽47 (Group 2); (b) a normal SST with 100% sensitivity when Cort0 ⩾314 nmol/L (Group 1) and ⩾323 nmol/L (Group 2). (2) There was significant correlation between Cort0 and 30-minute cortisol (

     = 0.65-0.78,

      < .001). (3) Median Cort0 was lower in those who failed SSTs compared to those who passed (147 vs 298 nmol/L respectively,

      < .001). (4) SST failure was commoner in Group 1 vs 2 (

     = .001). (5) There was no difference in outcome between out-patient and inpatient SSTs. (6) SST failure was most common for 'steroid related’ indications (39.6%,

      < .001).

    Smoking negatively affects health, and previous studies argue that secondhand smoke (SHS) has a significantly negative health effect. We investigated whether SHS in the workplace influences workers’ depression.

    Three years of data (2014, 2016, and 2018) from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were analyzed. Participants who were not current smokers were classified into the occupational SHS exposed and non-exposed groups. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) by adjusting various covariates. Stratified analysis with variables, such as year, sex, occupational classification, average working hours, was additionally performed.

    The crude ORs of depression was 1.51 (95% CI 1.27-1.80), and the fully adjusted OR with all the covariates was 1.57 (95% CI 1.30-1.88). This indicated a significant relationship between occupational SHS and depression. The ORs increased every 2 years 1.07 (95% CI 0.79-1.44) in 2014, 1.88 (95% CI 1.34-2.64) in 2016, and 2.07 (95% CI 1.43-2.99) in year 2018. Stratification analysis also showed a significant association between SHS and depression among those in the prolonged work hours group and male employees, as well as blue- and white-collar workers.

    SHS in the workplace was significantly associated with workers’ depression. Our study provides insights into the impact of exposure to SHS for workers and provides a basis for further research and policy-making in this field.
