    To investigate the effect of self-reported hearing loss on longitudinal cognitive function in a risk-enriched cohort of clinically-unimpaired, late middle-aged adults.

    579 participants from the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer’s Prevention (WRAP) were included. Hearing status was determined via self-reported history of diagnosed hearing loss. Each participant with self-reported hearing loss was age- and sex-matched to two participants who never reported hearing loss using nearest-neighbor matching. Linear mixed-effects models were used to examine associations between self-reported hearing loss and age-related cognitive trajectories with covariates of sex, literacy, and ethnicity, person-level random intercepts and age-related slopes. Cognitive outcomes encompassed measures of speed and flexibility, visuospatial memory, and ral auditory measures in this cohort would clarify the robustness of these findings.

    Mesenchymal stem cells-conditioned medium (MSC-CM) provides a promising cell-free therapy for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) mainly due to the paracrine of MSCs, but the precise mechanisms remain unclear.     To this end, an AD cellular model was firstly established by okadaic acid (OA)-treated SH-SY5Y cells, and then treated by hucMSC-CM to assess the oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, apoptosis, AD-related genes, and signaling pathways.

    hucMSC-CM significantly deceased tau phosphorylated at Thr181 (p181-tau) level, which was increased in AD. hucMSC-CM also alleviated intracellular and mitochondrial oxidative stress in OA-treated SH-SY5Y cells. In addition, hucMSC-CM suppressed apoptosis and improved mitochondrial function in OA-treated SH-SY5Y cells. Flow cytometric analysis indicated that hucMSC-CM exerted the protective effects relying on or partly extracellular vesicle (EV) mitochondrial transfer from hucMSCs to OA-treated SH-SY5Y cells. Moreover, RNA sequencing data further demonstrated that hucMSC-CM regulated many AD-related genes, signaling pathways and mitochondrial function.

    Our objective in this study was to focus on two hemorrhagic MRI manifestations of small vessel disease [cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) and cortical superficial siderosis (cSS)] and associations with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) iron levels. In addition, we aimed to analyze CSF biomarkers for dementia and associations with CSF metal levels.

    This is a cross-sectional study of 196 patients who underwent memory clinic investigation, including brain MRI. CSF was collected and analyzed for metals, amyloid-β (Aβ) 42, total tau (T-tau), and phosphorylated tau (P-tau), and CSF/serum albumin ratios. Statistical analyses were performed using generalized linear models.

    No significant difference was found between CSF metal levels across diagnostic groups. Higher iron and copper levels were associated with higher CSF levels of Aβ42, T-tau, P-tau, and CSF/serum albumin ratios (p < 0.05). Zinc was associated with higher CSF/serum albumin ratios. There was no significant association between CMBs or cSS and CSF iron levels. An increase in CSF iron with the number of CMBs was seen in APOEɛ4 carriers.

    A significant proportion of people with dementia live alone, but little is known about their specific needs.

    To understand the profile of people living alone with mild-to-moderate dementia in the UK and identify any systematic differences associated with living situation.

    We analyzed cross-sectional data from 1,541 people with mild-to-moderate dementia and 1,277 caregivers participating in the IDEAL cohort at the first wave of assessment.

    There were 1,256 (81.5%) people with dementia living with others and 285 (18.5%) living alone, of whom 51 (3% of whole sample) reported little or no informal support. There were relatively few differences associated with living situation and odds ratios were generally small. People living alone were older on average, and more likely to be female, than those living with others. Those living alone were more likely to have higher cognitive ability and self-reported functional ability, and more social contact with those from other households. They were also lonelier, expressed less satisfaction with life, and used home care services and equipment more. There were no differences in symptoms, mood, quality of life, or well-being.

    The findings support the view that it is possible to 'live well’ with mild-to-moderate dementia while living alone, given appropriate support, including home care and equipment. Nevertheless, it is important to consider how those living alone may be supported to have a more satisfactory experience, and how health and social care services can best respond to their needs.

    Dementia is a persistent, progressive state of cognitive decline against which pharmacological intervention has a modest efficacy, reducing behavioral but not cognitive symptoms. Therefore, different non-pharmacological therapies have been developed; the most scientifically recognized are cognitive therapies that have improved cognitive function and daily life activities.

    To evaluate the effectiveness of a multicomponent cognitive stimulation therapy (SADEM) on cognitive and behavioral function and daily life activities in patients with mild stage dementia.

    Controlled clinical trial with pre- and post-intervention (12 months) and follow-up (24 months after) evaluations. Participants (67) diagnosed with mild dementia were randomly assigned to intervention group (n = 39) or control group (n = 28). The intervention took place throughout one year and consisted of two weekly 90-minute sessions and one more a year after a monthly follow-up. Instruments were used to evaluate outcomes in cognitive, behavioral, and affective domains.

    The results showed statistically significant differences, with improvement in the cognitive outcomes and the Dementia Index post-intervention (p = 0.01). No progression of the disease was observed at the end of the study.

    Because benefits seem to increase with patient’s motor involvement, we studied sensorimotor synchronization (SMS) abilities of patients with cognitive impairments (Alzheimer’s disease, vascular and mixed dementia) and of patients with no evidence of cognitive impairments. More specifically, we compared the impact of a live performance by a musician to a video recording on SMS.

    SMS to a metronomic or a musical stimulus was assessed while patients watched a live musician or his pre-recorded video.

    SMS to a metronome was better than to music but this effect was modulated by the social context. While SMS to a metronome was better when facing a video than a live performance, there was no impact of social context on SMS to music. No group differences of SMS were found.

    The aim of this study was to test whether impaired spatial navigation frequently occurring in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is specifically associated with neurodegeneration in BA34.

    The study included baseline data of MCI patients enrolled in the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative with high-resolution structural MRI, brain FDG PET, and complete visuospatial ability scores of the Everyday Cognition test (VS-ECog) within 30 days of PET. A standard mask of BA34 predefined in MNI space was mapped to individual native space to determine grey matter volume and metabolic activity in BA34 on MRI and on (partial volume corrected) FDG PET, respectively. The association of the VS-ECog sum score with grey matter volume and metabolic activity in BA34, APOE4 carrier status, age, education, and global cognition (ADAS-cog-13 score) was tested by linear regression. BA28, which constitutes the lateral part of the ERC, was used as control region.

    The eligibility criteria led to inclusion of 379 MCI subjects. The VS-ECog sum score was negatively correlated with grey matter volume in BA34 (β= -0.229, p = 0.022) and age (β= -0.124, p = 0.036), and was positively correlated with ADAS-cog-13 (β= 0.175, p = 0.003). None of the other predictor variables contributed significantly.

    Agitation in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has been hypothesized to be an expression of anxiety, but whether anxiety early in the course of dementia could be a risk factor for developing later agitation is unknown.

    We used the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database to examine the longitudinal relationship between anxiety and incident agitation in individuals with a diagnosis of AD at baseline or during follow-up.

    Longitudinal neuropsychiatric symptom data from AD individuals who were agitation-free at study baseline (N = 272) were analyzed using mixed effects regression models to test the longitudinal relationship between baseline and incident anxiety with incident agitation.

    Anxiety at baseline was not associated with subsequent agitation, but there was a positive linear relationship between incident anxiety and agitation over the study duration. Baseline apathy and delusions were consistently associated with subsequent agitation and greater disease severity and illness duration also appeared to be risk factors for agitation.

    Our findings support the concept that anxiety and agitation are likely to be distinct rather than equivalent constructs in mild-moderate AD. Future longitudinal cohort studies are needed to replicate these findings and further characterize potential risk factors for agitation, such as apathy and delusions.

    Amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques and tau neurofibrillary tangles are two neuropathological hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which both can be visualized in vivo using PET radiotracers, opening new opportunities to study disease mechanisms.

    Our study investigated 11 non-PET factors in 5 categories (including demographic, clinical, genetic, MRI, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) features) possibly affecting PET amyloid and tau status to explore the relationships between amyloid and tau pathology, and whether these features had a different association with amyloid and tau status.

    We included 372 nondemented elderly from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative cohort. All underwent PET amyloid and tau analysis simultaneously, and were grouped into amyloid/tau quadrants based on previously established abnormality cut points. We examined the associations of above selected features with PET amyloid and tau status using a multivariable logistic regression model, then explored whether there was an obvious correlation between the significant features and PET amyloid or tau levels.

    Our results demonstrated that PET amyloid and tau status were differently affected by patient features, and CSF biomarker features provided most significant values associating PET findings. CSF Aβ42/40 was the most important factor affecting amyloid PET status, and negatively correlated with amyloid PET levels. CSF pTau could significantly influence both amyloid and tau PET status. Besides CSF pTau and Aβ42, APOEɛ4 allele status and Mini-Mental State Examination scores also could influence tau PET status, and significantly correlated with tau PET levels.

    Circular RNA (circRNA) is a class of non-coding RNA that is vital for regulating gene expression and biological functions. Mounting studies demonstrate that circRNA is crucial for human cancer development. However, the role of circ_0000039 in gastric cancer (GC) remains uncertain.

    Normal human gastric tissues and GC tissue samples were collected, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was employed to detect the expression levels of circ_0000039, miR-1292-5p, and DEK. GC cell lines with overexpression and low expression of circ_0000039 were constructed. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), scratch healing and Transwell experiments were used to assess the function of circ_0000039 on the proliferation, migration and invasion of GC cells. Bioinformatics analysis and dual-luciferase reporter assays were employed to detect the targeting relationship between circ_0000039 and miR-1292-5p.

    Circ_0000039 expression was up-regulated in GC tissues and cell lines, and it was significantly related with poor differentiation of tumor tissues. In addition, circ_0000039 overexpression enhanced the proliferation, migration and invasion of GC cells, while circ_0000039 depletion inhibited these malignant biological behaviors. In terms of mechanism, it was found that circ_0000039 promoted the proliferation and progression of GC cells by adsorbing miR-1292-5p and up-regulating the expression of DEK.

    Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and aggressive primary malignant brain tumor with a high mortality rate. Aberrant activation of signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) signaling results in tumor pathogenesis and progression by regulating cell cycle, cell survival and immune response.

    Therapeutic targets and prognostic biomarkers within the STAT family in GBM were explored using web applications and databases.

    High levels of STAT1/3/5A/5B/6 and low levels of STAT4 were observed in GBM patients. GBM patients expressing high STAT1/2/3/5A/6 and low STAT4/5B levels had the worse overall survival. Among the STAT family, STAT4 and STAT6 were the most frequently mutated genes. A low to moderate correlation among members of the STAT family was observed. Additionally, the STATs were involved in activation or inhibition of cancer related pathways. Analysis of immune infiltrates showed STAT5A levels to be significantly correlated with abundance of immune cells and levels of immune gene biomarkers. Gene ontology (GO) functions and KEGG pathway analysis indicated that STAT5A is involved in immune response-regulating signaling pathway, neutrophil and lymphocyte mediated immunity, single-stranded DNA binding, cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, NOD-like receptor signaling pathway, NF-kappa B signaling pathway and TNF signaling pathway. Moreover, several kinase and transcription factor targets of STAT5A in GBM were identified.

    We report here therapeutic targets, prognostic biomarkers and regulation network of STAT family in GBM. These findings lay a foundation for further studies on the role of STAT family in therapy and prognosis of GBM. Further studies are required to verify our results.

    Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) are critical regulators of tumor progression.

    To determine how the lncRNA membrane associated guanylate kinase, WW and PDZ domain-containing 2 (MAG12) antisense RNA 3 (MAGI2-AS3) and the phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) gene function in regulating bladder cancer (Bca) progression.

    Total RNA from 80 Bca tissues and 30 paired para-cancerous tissues from patients was sequentially extracted, quantified, purified, and reverse transcribed using RT-PCR. A library was constructed and sequenced. Four Bca cell lines and a normal urothelial cell line were transfected with lentiviral plasmids, and cell migration and invasion were assayed in vitro. An orthotopic mouse model of Bca was created for in vivo studies.

    MAGI2-AS3 expression was significantly downregulated in Bca, compared with normal tissues, and negatively associated with tumor stage and a poor prognosis. MAGI2-AS3 and its sense RNA MAGI2 showed significant and positive correlation. The expression of MAGI2 and its downstream gene, PTEN, increased in Bca cells overexpressing MAGI2-AS3, and interference by MAGI2 expression reversed the migration and invasion inhibited by MAGI2-AS3 overexpression.

    Contactin1 (CNTN1), a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, is known to correlate with tumor development and progression. Although recent studies have found that elevated CNTN1 has been demonstrated in some types of cancers, the expression and prognosis of CNTN1 in colorectal cancer (CRC) are unclear. Here, we aimed to determine the clinicopathological characteristics and prognostic role of CNTN1 in CRC patients.

    The protein expression of CNTN1 in tumor tissues was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. In addition, the mRNA and protein expressions of CNTN1 were examined by qRT-PCR and Western blotting analysis in 40 matched adjacent normal mucosa samples. The relationships of CNTN1 with clinicopathological data and prognosis significance were analyzed.

This reasearch aimed to investigate the downstream regulatory pathways of HOTAIR in breast cancer. The levels of HOTAIR and miR-129-5p were examined in breast cancer tissues and SKBR3 and MCF7 cells by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Cell proliferation was examined by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. Cell migration and invasion were estimated by transwell assay. Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related markers (E-cadherin, N-cadherin and Vimentin) were measured by Western blot assay. The expression of Frizzled 7 (FZD7) was detected using qRT-PCR or Western blot assay. Bioinformatics analysis, luciferase reporter assay or RNA Immunoprecipitation (RIP) assay was performed to explore the molecular mechanism of HOTAIR in breast cancer. Xenograft analysis was utilized to evaluate the tumor growth in vivo. HOTAIR and FZD7 were upregulated, while miR-129-5p was down-regulated in breast cancer tissues and cells. Knockdown of miR-129-5p reversed the effect of HOTAIR knockdown on cell proliferation, migration, invasion and EMT. FZD7 restored the inhibition of miR-129-5p on breast cancer progression. Furthermore, HOTAIR was a sponge of miR-129-5p and FZD7 was a target of miR-129-5p. Knockdown of HOTAIR inhibited the tumor growth in vivo. HOTAIR facilitated breast cancer progression by regulating the miR-129-5p/FZD7 axis, indicating that HOTAIR may be a potential biomarker and therapeutic target for breast cancer.

    Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is one of the most widespread cancer with increasing morbidity and mortality. FAS-associated protein with death domain (FADD) is considered as an essential instrument in cell death, whereas Bcl-XS promotes apoptosis through inhibiting the activity of Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL.

    We detected the expression of FADD and Bcl-XS in resected NSCLC tissues by immunohistochemistry, and investigated their association with clinicopathological characteristics and prognostic significance of NSCLC patients.

    Bcl-XS expression was significantly increased in well and moderate differentiated lung SCC (P= 0.004). Lung ADC patients with overexpression of FADD and lung SCC patients with low expression of Bcl-XS had importantly lower overall survival rates by Kaplan-Meier analysis (P= 0.033, P= 0.02, respectively). Multivariate analysis confirmed that elevated expression of FADD was an independent poor prognostic factor for patients with surgically resected lung ADC (P= 0.027) and increased expressioADD was identified as independent poor prognostic factor for patients with surgically resected lung ADC, however, increased expression of Bcl-XS was an independent good prognostic biomarker for patients with surgically resected lung SCC.

    Low back pain is a very common musculoskeletal complaint that impacts patients’ quality of life in numerous ways. Facet joint injection is a widely used spinal intervention to relieve back pain. Effects of facet joint injection on spinopelvic parameters and the relationship between injection levels and spinopelvic parameter changes have not been evaluated before.

    To compare spinopelvic parameters before and after injections at different levels, and to evaluate the correlation between these changes and functional outcome.

    144 patients were included in the study and retrospectively grouped by injection level Group 1 (n= 72), L4-L5 and L5-S1, and group 2 (n= 72), L1-L2, L2-L3, L3-L4, L4-L5 and L5-S1. Pre- and post-injection Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), sacral slope, pelvic tilt, pelvic incidence, and intervertebral angles between T12 and S1 were compared. The correlation between ODI and radiographic parameter changes was evaluated.

    The pre- to post-injection ODI change was significantly lower in group 2 (p= 0.010). There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of pre- and post-injection spinopelvic parameters before and after injection (p> 0.05) except pelvic tilt (p= 0.001 and p= 0.007, respectively). There was a significant moderate positive correlation between the change in the ODI value and the change in pelvic tilt (P= 0.012, r= 0.581).

    Problems related to ankle instability, decreased proprioceptive sensation, altered static and dynamic balance abilities are suggested as major representative factors that contribute to the recurrence of ankle sprains.

    To assess the effect of a three-week intervention (intervention emphasizing diagonal eccentric contraction (IEDEC) and intervention of general exercise (IGE)) on static and dynamic balance abilities, ankle strength and joint position sense at pre- and post-intervention, and at two- and three-week post-intervention.

    Twenty-five participants with ankle instability, including a history of ankle sprain and recurrent episodes of giving way, were enrolled in the study. They were randomly classified into the IEDEC group (n= 12) and the IGE group (n= 13). Dynamic balance was examined using the Y Balance Test, four-way ankle strength was measured, and the static balance was evaluated using the total displacement of the center of pressure (COP). To identify the joint position error, eversion and inversion of the ankle angle were measured.

    The results revealed significant increases in ankle dynamic stability and strength at two and three weeks post-intervention (p< 0.05). Similarly, the total displacement of the COP differed significantly over time, with a higher COP during the initial measurement than at two and three weeks intervention (p< 0.05) General balance training with IEDEC can improve position sense during ankle inversion (p< 0.05).

    Recruiting participants into clinical trials continues to be a challenge, which can result in study delay or termination. Recent studies have used social media to enhance recruitment outcomes. An assessment of the literature on the use of social media for this purpose is required.

    This study aims to answer the following questions (1) How is the use of social media, in combination with traditional approaches to enhance clinical trial recruitment and enrollment, represented in the literature? and (2) Do the data on recruitment and enrollment outcomes presented in the literature allow for comparison across studies?

    We conducted a comprehensive literature search across 7 platforms to identify clinical trials that combined social media and traditional methods to recruit patients. Study and participant characteristics, recruitment methods, and recruitment outcomes were evaluated and compared.

    We identified 2371 titles and abstracts through our systematic search. Of these, we assessed 95 full papers and deterove clinical trial participation is hindered by reporting inconsistencies, preliminary data suggest that social media can increase participation and reduce per-participant cost. The adoption of consistent standards for reporting recruitment and enrollment outcomes is required to advance our understanding and use of social media to support clinical trial success.

    The rising prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the more aggressive subtype, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), is a global public health concern. Left untreated, NAFLD/NASH can lead to cirrhosis, liver failure, and death. The current standard for diagnosing and staging liver disease is a liver biopsy, which is costly, invasive, and carries risk for the patient. Therefore, there is a growing need for a reliable, feasible, and cost-effective, noninvasive diagnostic tool for these conditions. LiverMultiScan is one such promising tool that uses multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) to characterize liver tissue and to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of liver diseases of various etiologies.

    Weight management apps may provide support and management options for individuals with overweight and obesity. Research on the quality of weight management mHealth apps among the Saudi population is insufficient despite frequent use.

    The aims of this study were to explore user perceptions of weight management apps, explore reasons for starting and stopping app use, appraise the quality of weight management apps available in the App Store, and compare the features currently available within the app market and those that are most desirable to weight management app users.

    A web-based survey consisted of 31 open and closed questions about sociodemographic information, general health questions, app use, app user perceptions, and discontinuation of app use. The quality of the weight management apps available on the App Store was assessed using the Mobile App Rating Scale and evidence-based strategies. We also used six sigma evaluations to ensure that the quality measured by the tools consistently meets customfor designing an effective app.

    Digital pain mapping allows for remote and ecological momentary assessment in patients over multiple time points spanning days to months. Frequent ecological assessments may reveal tendencies and fluctuations more clearly and provide insights into the trajectory of a patient’s pain.

    The primary aim of this study is to remotely map and track the intensity and distribution of pain and discomfort (eg, burning, aching, and tingling) in patients with nonmalignant spinal referred pain over 12 weeks using a web-based app for digital pain mapping.     Federated learning (FL) is a newly proposed machine-learning method that uses a decentralized dataset. Since data transfer is not necessary for the learning process in FL, there is a significant advantage in protecting personal privacy. Therefore, many studies are being actively conducted in the applications of FL for diverse areas.

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability and performance of FL using three benchmark datasets, including a clinical benchmark dataset.

    To evaluate FL in a realistic setting, we implemented FL using a client-server architecture with Python. The implemented client-server version of the FL software was deployed to Amazon Web Services. Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology (MNIST), Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-III (MIMIC-III), and electrocardiogram (ECG) datasets were used to evaluate the performance of FL. To test FL in a realistic setting, the MNIST dataset was split into 10 different clients, with one digit for each client. In addction because there is no requirement to centralize the data.

    Recent research has led to the development of many information technology-supported systems for health care control, including systems estimating nutrition from images of meals. Systems that capture data about eating and exercise are useful for people with diabetes as well as for people who are simply on a diet. Continuous monitoring is key to effective dietary control, requiring systems that are simple to use and motivate users to pay attention to their meals. Unfortunately, most current systems are complex or fail to motivate. Such systems require some manual inputs such as selection of an icon or image, or by inputting the category of the user’s food. The nutrition information fed back to users is not especially helpful, as only the estimated detailed nutritional values contained in the meal are typically provided.

    In this paper, we introduce healthiness of meals as a more useful and meaningful general standard, and present a novel algorithm that can estimate healthiness from meal images without requiration to nutritional value-based ranking by a dietitian. We then proposed a network that allows conditions that are important for judging the meal image, extracting features that eliminate background information and are independent of location. Under these conditions, the experimental results showed that our network achieves higher accuracy of healthiness ranking estimation than the conventional image ranking method. The results of this experiment in detecting unhealthy meals suggest that our system can be used to assist health care workers in establishing meal plans for patients with diabetes who need advice in choosing healthy meals.

    Older migrant patients with cancer face many language- and culture-related barriers to patient participation during medical consultations. To bridge these barriers, an eHealth tool called Health Communicator was developed in the Netherlands. Essentially used as a digital translator that can collect medical history information from patients, the Health Communicator did not include an oncological module so far, despite the fact that the prevalence of Dutch migrant patients with cancer is rising.

    This study aims to systematically develop, implement, and conduct a pilot evaluation of an oncological module that can be integrated into the Health Communicator to stimulate patient participation among older Turkish-Dutch and Moroccan-Dutch patients with cancer.

    The Spiral Technology Action Research model, which incorporates 5 cycles that engage key stakeholders in intervention development, was used as a framework. The listen phase consisted of a needs assessment. The plan phase consisted of developing the contenurvivors, and health care professionals found the oncological module to be a useful tool and have shown intentions to incorporate it into future consultation sessions.     Psychosocial problems are common during adolescence and can have long-lasting effects on health and on academic and social functioning. YouthCHAT, an electronic HEEADSSS (home, education, eating, activities, drugs and alcohol, suicide and depression, sexuality and safety)-aligned instrument, has recently been demonstrated to be an acceptable and effective school-based psychosocial screener for 13-year-old (Year 9) high school students.

    This study aims to compare acceptability and detection rates with repeated YouthCHAT screenings of high school students when they are 13 years old (Year 9) and 14 years old (Year 10).

    We invited all Year-10 students to complete a YouthCHAT screening in 2018. Rates of positively identified issues were compared between the subset of students screened in both 2017 and 2018. Student acceptability toward YouthCHAT was investigated through focus group sessions. Onward clinical referral rates in 2018 were also investigated to explore the potential referral burden following scree of psychosocial issues and early intervention within a high school environment.

    Although further evaluation is needed, our results support the value of YouthCHAT as an acceptable and effective instrument with which to achieve routine identification of psychosocial issues and early intervention within a high school environment.

    Tension lies between the need to increase access to organ transplantation and the equally urgent need to prevent inadvertent transmission of infectious diseases or cancer from organ donors. Biovigilance, or the evaluation of potential donors, is often time-pressured and may be based on incomplete information.

    The Safety and Biovigilance in Organ Donation (SAFEBOD) study aims to improve estimates of infection and cancer transmission risk and explore how real-time data access could support decision-making.

    We will link existing donor referral, actual donor, recipient, and health-outcome data sets from 2000-2015 in New South Wales. Organ donor data sets will include the Organ Donor Characterizing Risk-Profile of Donors Study, the National Organ Matching System, the Australian and New Zealand Organ Donor Register, and the Australian and New Zealand Living Donor Kidney Register. Recipient data sets will include the Australian and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Register, the Australian and New Zealand Carisk group.

    Data were requested from each of the listed registries in September 2018, and data collection is ongoing. Linked data from all listed data sets are expected to be complete in September 2020.

    The SAFEBOD study will overcome current limitations in organ donation by accessing comprehensive information on referred organ donors and recipients in existing data sets. The study will provide robust estimates of disease transmission and nontransmission events based on recent data. It will also describe the agreement between perceived risk estimated at the time of referral and verified risk when all health outcome data are accessible. The improved understanding of transmission and nontransmission events will inform clinical decisions and highlight where current policies can be revised to broaden the acceptance of deceased donors.

    Chronic low back pain is a common problem and is associated with high costs, including those related to health care and indirect costs due to absence at work or reduced productivity. Previous studies have demonstrated that acupuncture or electroacupuncture can relieve low back pain. Electronic acupuncture shoes (EAS) are a novel device designed in this study. This device combines the properties of acupuncture and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation for clinical use.

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of EAS in patients with chronic low back pain.

    In this prospective double-blinded randomized controlled study, the data of 83 patients who experienced chronic low back pain were analyzed. Patients came to our clinic for 20 visits and underwent assessment and treatment. Patients were randomly allocated to receive either EAS plus placebo nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (EAS group, n=42) or sham EAS plus NSAIDs (NSAID group, n=41). The visual analog scale (VAS) score and robserved in the VAS score before and after treatment in each visit and in the quality of life in both groups.

    EAS might serve as a reliable alternative therapeutic tool for patients with chronic low back pain who are contraindicated for oral NSAIDs.

    Acne vulgaris is a common skin disease primarily affecting young adults. Given that the internet has become a major source of health information, especially among the young, the internet is a powerful tool of communication and has a significant influence on patients.

    This study aimed to clarify the features of patients’ interest in and evaluate the quality of information about acne vulgaris on the internet.

    We compared the search volumes on acne vulgaris with those of other dermatological diseases using Google Trends from January 2004 to August 2019. We also determined the search volumes for relevant keywords of acne vulgaris on Google and Naver and evaluated the quality of answers to the queries in KnowledgeiN.

    The regression analysis of Google Trends data demonstrated that the patients’ interest in acne vulgaris was higher than that for other dermatological diseases, such as atopic dermatitis (β=-20.33, 95% CI -22.27 to -18.39, P<.001) and urticaria (β=-27.09, 95% CI -29.03 to -25.15, P<.001) and has increased yearly (β=2.38, 95% CI 2.05 to 2.71, P<.001). The search volume for acne vulgaris was significantly higher in the summer than in the spring (β=-5.04, 95% CI -9.21 to -0.88, P=.018) and on weekends than on weekdays (β=-6.68, 95% CI -13.18 to -0.18, P=.044). The most frequently searched relevant keywords with „acne vulgaris” and „cause” were „stress,” „food,” and „cosmetics.” Among food, the 2 highest acne vulgaris-related keywords were milk and wheat in Naver and coffee and ramen in Google. The queries in Naver KnowledgeiN were mostly answered by a Korean traditional medicine doctor (53.4%) or the public (33.6%), but only 12.0% by dermatologists.

    People use the internet as a primary source for learning about medical procedures and their associated safety profiles and risks. Although abortion is one of the most common procedures worldwide among women in their reproductive years, it is controversial and highly politicized. Substantial scientific evidence demonstrates that abortion is safe and does not increase a woman’s future risk for depressive disorders or infertility. The extent to which information found on the internet reflects these medical facts in a trustworthy and unbiased manner is not known.

    The purpose of this study was to collate and describe the trustworthiness and political slant or bias of web-based information about abortion safety and risks of depression and infertility following abortion.

    We performed a cross-sectional study of internet websites using 3 search topics (1) is abortion safe?, (2) does abortion cause depression?, and (3) does abortion cause infertility? We used the Google Adwords tool to identify the search terms mthe public to believe abortion is riskier than it is.

    People seeking information about the safety and potential risks of abortion are likely to encounter a substantial amount of untrustworthy and slanted/biased abortion information. Anti-choice sites are prevalent, often difficult to identify as anti-choice, and less trustworthy than neutral or pro-choice sites. Web searches may lead the public to believe abortion is riskier than it is.

    Actions to improve healthy aging and delay morbidity are crucial, given the global aging population. We believe that biological age estimation can help promote the health of the general population. Biological age reflects the heterogeneity in functional status and vulnerability to disease that chronological age cannot. Thus, biological age assessment is a tool that provides an intuitively meaningful outcome for the general population, and as such, facilitates our understanding of the extent to which lifestyle can increase health span.

    This interdisciplinary study intends to develop a biological age model and explore its usefulness.

    The model development comprised three consecutive phases (1) conducting a cross-sectional study to gather candidate biomarkers from 100 individuals representing normal healthy aging people (the derivation cohort); (2) estimating the biological age using principal component analysis; and (3) testing the clinical use of the model in a validation cohort of overweight adults attending a lifestyle intervention course.

    We completed the data collection and analysis of the cross-sectional study, and the initial results of the principal component analysis are ready. Interpretation and refinement of the model is ongoing. Recruitment to the validation cohort is forthcoming. We expect the results to be published by December 2021.

    We expect the biological age model to be a useful indicator of disease risk and metabolic risk, and further research should focus on validating the model on a larger scale.

    The home environment is an important means of support in home-based care services for older people. A home environment that facilitates healthy aging can help older adults maximize their self-care abilities and integrate and utilize care resources. However, some home environments fail to meet the needs of older adults with disabilities.

    This paper aimed to study the needs of older adults with disabilities with respect to adaptation to aging, and to analyze the associations of individual factors and dysfunction with those needs.

    A questionnaire survey was administered to 400 older adults with disabilities from 10 communities in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, China. The survey was conducted from August 2018 to February 2019.

    A total of 370 participants completed the survey. The proportion of participants with mild dysfunction was the highest (128/370, 34.59%), followed by those with extremely mild (107/370, 28.92%), moderate (72/370, 19.46%), and severe (63/370, 17.03%) dysfunction. Yet our understanding of the anatomical and physiological diversity of these neurons and the behaviors that they influence is limited. We previously discovered that grooming of the Drosophila melanogaster antennae is elicited by an antennal mechanosensory chordotonal organ, the Johnston’s organ (JO) (Hampel et al., 2015). Here, we describe anatomically and physiologically distinct JO mechanosensory neuron subpopulations that each elicit antennal grooming. We show that the subpopulations project to different, discrete zones in the brain and differ in their responses to mechanical stimulation of the antennae. Although activation of each subpopulation elicits antennal grooming, distinct subpopulations also elicit the additional behaviors of wing flapping or backward locomotion. Our results provide a comprehensive description of the diversity of mechanosensory neurons in the JO, and reveal that distinct JO subpopulations can elicit both common and distinct behavioral responses.The Spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, its receptor-binding domain (RBD), and its primary receptor ACE2 are extensively glycosylated. The impact of this post-translational modification on viral entry is yet unestablished. We expressed different glycoforms of the Spike-protein and ACE2 in CRISPR-Cas9 glycoengineered cells, and developed corresponding SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus. We observed that N- and O-glycans had only minor contribution to Spike-ACE2 binding. However, these carbohydrates played a major role in regulating viral entry. Blocking N-glycan biosynthesis at the oligomannose stage using both genetic approaches and the small molecule kifunensine dramatically reduced viral entry into ACE2 expressing HEK293T cells. Blocking O-glycan elaboration also partially blocked viral entry. Mechanistic studies suggest multiple roles for glycans during viral entry. Among them, inhibition of N-glycan biosynthesis enhanced Spike-protein proteolysis. This could reduce RBD presentation on virus, lowering binding to host ACE2 and decreasing viral entry. Thalamic innervation of associative cortex targets several interneuron types, modulating dynamics and influencing plasticity. Is this structure-function relationship distinct from that of sensory thalamocortical systems? Here, we systematically compared function and structure across a sensory and an associative thalamocortical loop in the mouse. Enhancing excitability of mediodorsal thalamus, an associative structure, resulted in prefrontal activity dominated by inhibition. Equivalent enhancement of medial geniculate excitability robustly drove auditory cortical excitation. Structurally, geniculate axons innervated excitatory cortical targets in a preferential manner and with larger synaptic terminals, providing a putative explanation for functional divergence. The two thalamic circuits also had distinct input patterns, with mediodorsal thalamus receiving innervation from a diverse set of cortical areas.
