    Its intra-day and inter-day precision were carried out by relative standard deviation ranging from 2.2 to 9.2%. Finally, the applicability of this method was assessed by the analysis of Curcumae Longae Rhizoma and turmeric tea samples. The results showed that these samples were detected successfully and the spiked recoveries over the range of 85.3-108.9% with relative standard deviations of 1.6-8.9% were attained, indicating its high relative recoveries with good precision in real sample analysis.The COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated the need to reliably detect the presence of viral genomes in human clinical samples. The most accurate viral tests involve the use of qPCR. Thus, it is important for students to understand the mechanism to detect viral genomes by qPCR including critical qPCR controls and how to properly interpret qPCR data. Herein, we describe a 2-week undergraduate laboratory to detect a viral genome in a human DNA sample. The strategy follows a SARS-CoV-2 qPCR test in numerous ways. Students are provided isolated DNA representing a mock human patient sample, and determine if a viral genome (bacteriophage lambda) is present using qPCR. A battery of control samples and patient pooling strategies are utilized. The laboratory exercise is successful based on high rates of student success in detecting viral genomes, pre-quiz and post-quiz assessments focusing on viral qPCR testing, and positive student comments.

    Persistent descending mesocolon (PDM) is a fetal abnormality in which the left-sided colon is not fused to the retroperitoneum, and it is often accompanied by the adhesion between the mesocolon and small bowel mesentery. Due to its rarity, whether PDM exhibits anatomical characteristics of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) and left colic artery (LCA), and how the anomaly affects laparoscopic surgery are largely unknown. We investigated the branches of these arteries and outcomes of patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery.

    Based on computed tomography (CT) and three-dimensional CT angiography, branching patterns of the IMA, LCA and branches originating from the LCA were analysed in 954 patients with left-sided colon or rectal cancer. PDM was diagnosed by preoperative CT colonography, and confirmed at time of surgery. The anatomical features of the vessels and short-term outcomes of laparoscopic surgery were compared between patient groups stratified by PDM.

    Twelve patients (1.3%) were diagnosed with PDM. No branching pattern of the IMA specific to PDM was noted. On the other hand, patients with PDM had fewer branches (mean 1.0) from the LCA than those without PDM (mean 1.8, p= 0.009). In patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery, outcomes such as operative time, intraoperative blood loss, and number of harvested nodes were comparable between the two patient groups.

However, the above anatomical feature increases the risk of poor colonic perfusion when dividing the LCA.The aim of this study was to compute intra-class correlations (ICCs) for weight-related and patient-reported outcomes in a cluster randomized clinical trial (cRCT) for weight loss. Baseline and follow-up data from the Promoting Successful Weight Loss in Primary Care in Louisiana (PROPEL) cRCT were used in this analysis. ICCs were computed for baseline and follow-up measures, and changes in body weight, cardiometabolic risk factors and health-related and weight-related quality of life at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months. Baseline ICCs ranged from 0 for PROMIS measures of anxiety and fatigue to 0.055 for total cholesterol (median = 0.019). The ICCs were higher for changes and decreased over time during follow-up. The ICCs for changes were highest in the pooled sample (intervention and usual care combined) followed by the intervention and usual care groups, respectively. The results demonstrated significant ICCs for several outcomes in a weight loss cRCT. The ICCs differed in magnitude depending on whether baseline versus longitudinal data were used, whether data were combined across treatment arms or were considered separately, and varied across the follow-up period. All these factors must be considered when choosing an ICC to inform sample size estimates for future weight loss cRCTs conducted in primary care settings.Chemical exposure estimation through the dermal route is an underemphasized area of ecological risk assessment for terrestrial animals. Currently, there are efforts to create exposure models to estimate doses from this pathway for use in ecological risk assessment. One significant limitation has been insufficient published data to characterize exposure and to support the selection and parameterization of appropriate models, particularly for amphibians in terrestrial habitats. Recent publications measuring pesticide doses to terrestrial-phase amphibians have begun to rectify this situation. We collated and summarized available measurements of terrestrial amphibian dermal exposure to pesticides from 11 studies in which researchers measured tissue concentrations associated with known pesticide experimental application rates. This data set included tissue concentrations in 11 amphibian species and 14 different pesticides.     Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is rare, with poorer outcomes than differentiated thyroid cancer. We aimed to identify areas for improvement in the pre-operative evaluation of patients with possible MTC in a high-volume endocrine surgery unit in accordance with current practice guidelines. We hypothesised that the selective use of serum calcitonin (sCT) as a biomarker for possible MTC could guide the extent of initial surgical management.

    We recruited MTC patients between 2000 and 2020 from the Monash University Endocrine Surgery Unit database. Demographics, tumour characteristics, pre-operative evaluation, operative management, and outcomes were analysed.

    Of 1454 thyroid cancer patients, 43 (3%) had MTC. Pre-operatively, 36 (84%) patients with MTC confirmed on cytology (28, 65%), elevated sCT (6, 14%) or RET mutation (2, 4%). Of these 36 patients, 31 (86%) had optimal extent of thyroidectomy and lymph node dissection (LND). Five (14%) had less than total thyroidectomy due to nerve injury. Thirty-four patients had compartmental LND. In the 12 (27%) patients with indeterminate or non-diagnostic cytology, 5 had elevated sCT and were managed as above. None of the remaining seven had LND, thus potentially suboptimal surgery.

    Our findings reflect the rarity of MTC, and the challenges of pre-operative diagnosis. The addition of sCT may improve surgical planning in patients with indeterminate cytology.

The addition of sCT may improve surgical planning in patients with indeterminate cytology.In this study, a novel surface initiated polymerization (SIP) method was developed from organic-inorganic hybrid persistent initiator coating (PIC) that embeds initiator molecules into inorganic silica sol-gel layer. Comparing with traditional silane initiator surface that prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, the PIC can effectively improve the mechanical stability of initiator that was able to endure ten-thousand times of friction cycles. Besides, it allows polymer grafting from sub-surface and so the grafted brushes, poly 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt (pSPMA) on the PIC were also much more wear-resisting than those prepared by the traditional ways. More importantly, the PIC could still trigger new polymerization reaction when the grafted brushes were worn off. In addition, the PIC is universal and can be covered on different substrates including glass, metals and plastics, etc. to realize functionalization of these materials. The approach may pave technological way for the application of surface grafted polymer brushes.

    Obesity is associated with the development of knee osteoarthritis (OA). The aim of this study was to examine the incidence of obesity in patients undergoing knee replacement (KR) for OA in Australia compared to the incidence of obesity in the general population.

    A cohort study was conducted, comparing data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2017-2018 National Health Survey with data from the National Joint Replacement Registry. The distribution of patients who underwent KR from July 2017 to June 2018 by BMI category was compared to the distribution of the general population, in age and gender sub-groups.

    During the study period, 35.6% of Australian adults were overweight and 31.3% were obese. Of the 56 217 patients who underwent primary KR for OA, 31.9% were overweight and 57.7% were obese. The relative risk of undergoing KR for OA increased with increasing BMI category. Class 1, 2 and 3 obese females aged 55-64 years were 4.7, 8.4 and 17.3 times more likely to undergo KR than their normal weight counterparts, respectively. Males in the same age and BMI categories were 3.4, 4.5 and 5.8 times more likely to undergo KR, respectively. Class 3 obese patients underwent KR 7 years younger, on average, than normal weight individuals.

    Achieving a high grade in the final-year comprehensive clinical care (CCC) course is not only important for the individual candidate but also to ensure competency of students as they transition from dental school into independent practice. Here, we aimed to identify predictors of success in the CCC that might prove useful to identify which, if any, students need focused intervention to improve their performance in the CCC.

    This was a cross-sectional study of two consecutive cohorts (2017-2018 and 2018-2019) of final-year (Year six) dental students (n= 180 females and n= 150 males) attending [King Abdulaziz University], Saudi Arabia. Age, gender, cumulative GPA to the start of Year six and assessment results were tabulated and analysed as independent variables in binary logistic regression to identify predictors of the final case grade (≤69% or >70%).

    Year five GPA (OR 1.07, 95% CI 1.02-1.12; p= .004) and female gender (OR 2.21, 95% CI 1.12-4.36; p= .02) were significantly associated with an increased odds of achieving a final case grade >70%.
