Among the 80 compounds screened, 6 compounds demonstrated ≥ 80% parasite growth inhibition at concentrations at which 5 compounds did not suppress host cell viability, while 3 kinase inhibitors (Bay 11-7082, Tyrphostin AG 1295 and PD-98059) had suppressive effects individually on parasite growth and host cell invasion, but did not strongly induce bradyzoite formation.Infection with blood flukes of the genus Schistosoma causes considerable human and animal morbidity, mortality and economic loss to the livestock industry. Current diagnostic tools have limitations. In this study, we compared the sedimentation and filtration methods for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis in livestock. A total of 196 faecal samples from cattle in Côte d’Ivoire were subjected to sedimentation and filtration for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis and other intestinal parasite infections. Schistosoma eggs or miracidia were discovered in 32 samples 15 by filtration only, seven by sedimentation only, six concurrently by both methods and four by observing miracidia swimming on the sedimentation slide. The sensitivity of sedimentation and filtration was 41% and 66%, respectively. Cases with no Schistosoma eggs identified in the sediment but miracidia swimming on the slide indicate that eggs had hatched before microscopy. More accurate diagnostic are required for livestock schistosomiasis, in order to better understand the epidemiology and inform control and elimination efforts in livestock and human populations. We confirm the presence of nymphs of the introduced pentastomid, Linguatula serrata, in the introduced rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus, in Australia, based on morphological and molecular results. Two nymphs were collected from a single rabbit near the Kosciuszko National Park in New South Wales. Unlike reports of nymphs from domestic animals, these nymphs were not encapsulated, despite having the morphological features of infective nymphs. The possibility of different development pathways in lagomorphs is discussed. Examination of feral deer for L. serrata was unsuccessful and potential reasons for a lack of infection in these animals are postulated. Our results reiterate the need for a combined morphological and molecular approach to the identification of L. serrata. Further sampling of a range of feral and native animals is required to determine the true range of intermediate hosts and their relative importance in the transmission of L. serrata in Australia.AIM In this study, we aimed to evaluate the neuromusculoskeletal late side effects and their impact on the quality of life of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma treated with radiochemotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS Twenty-seven patients were included. The mean follow-up was 61 months (range, 18-111 months). The median external radiotherapy dose applied to the nasopharynx and primary tumor was 70 Gy (range, 61-73 Gy). The mean dose received by the temporomandibular joint in the dose-volume histograms of these patients was 60.7 Gy. The maximal doses of the muscles responsible for cervical motion in different ranges were greater than 60 Gy, and the mean doses were greater than 40 Gy in the muscle groups, except for the extensor muscles. RESULTS Two patients had brachial plexus involvement, while 89% of the patients had restriction in flexion and extension movements. Of the patients, 52% had trismus. There was a significant correlation between extension restriction and general heath score and the physical subscale of the quality-of-life questionnaire (p = 0.01). There was also a correlation between trismus and pain killer usage (p = 0.004). CONCLUSION This is the first study to analyze long-term muscle and nerve toxicity and their correlation between doses in nasopharyngeal cancer patients following radiochemotherapy. Despite the advances in radiotherapy techniques, it is necessary to pay attention to the doses of the nerves and muscles for late effects.PURPOSE To analyze the surgical outcomes in terms of postoperative wound complications in a small case series of six patients treated with lateral cervical approach (LCA) for salvage total laryngectomy (STL) without prophylactic use of the pectoralis major myocutaneous flap (PMMF) or free flaps. METHODS Between September 2018 and August 2019, six patients with recurrent/residual squamous-cell carcinoma after (chemo)radiotherapy [(C)RT] underwent STL with minimally invasive LCA with the anterior myocutaneous flap (AMCF), sparing the prelaryngeal tissue. Clinical records were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS Wound dehiscence and local complications were prevented in five cases. Pharyngocutaneous fistula (PCF) occurred in one case and the closure was achieved by medical dressing with spontaneous healing within 15 days. Oral intake of liquids started 2 weeks after surgery in the five patients without local complications, after 24 days in the patient with PCF. CONCLUSION STL through the LCA after [(C)RT] failure seems to be feasible and effective in terms of prevention of local complications as wound dehiscence and fistula. More large clinical series are needed to confirm whether the use of LCA reduced the rate of postoperative wound complications following STL without the prophylactic use of pedicled or free flaps.PURPOSE This study aims to compare serum calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and 25-hydroxy (OH)-vitamin D levels in patients with benign essential blepharospasm (BEB) and healthy subjects and to determine their association with disease severity and frequency. METHODS This is a prospective study conducted in a tertiary care hospital. Fifty patients (female, 39; male, 11) with BEB and 22 healthy subjects (female, 15; male, 7) included in the study. Serum calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamin D levels of BEB and healthy groups were measured. Blepharospasm severity and frequency were assessed using scales ranging from 0 to 4 by following the Jankovic Rating Scale (JRS). RESULTS Though there was no significant difference regarding magnesium, phosphorus, and 25(OH)-vitamin D levels between the two groups, serum calcium levels of the BEB group were significantly lower than the control group (9.5 ± 0.4 and 9.9 ± 0.4 mg/dl, respectively; P = 0.002), although in the normal range (9-10.5 mg/dl). In the BEB group, the mean Jankovic severity and frequency scores were 3.29 ± 0.54 and 3.59 ± 0.61, respectively. There was a moderate negative correlation between serum 25(OH)-vitamin D levels and Jankovic severity score (r = - 0.332; P = 0.022). CONCLUSION Serum calcium levels of the BEB group were significantly lower than the healthy group. Serum vitamin D levels showed a moderate negative correlation with disease severity. The role of calcium and vitamin D in the evolution of the BEB need further investigation at the cellular and anatomical levels.PURPOSE To identify the functional outcome and evaluate the morphologic changes of patients with pachychoroid neovasculopathy (PNV) undergoing intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) combined with photodynamic therapy (PDT) at the 1-year follow-up. METHODS We retrospectively studied all the treatment-naïve PNV patients who were scheduled to undergo combination therapy between September 2017 and November 2018. All the patients received three consecutive monthly injections of 0.5 mg/0.05 mL ranibizumab as loading doses. Full-dose PDT was performed within 1 week of the first injection. Retreatment was allowed if evidence of clinical deterioration or the presence of fluid on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography examination performed at the 1-month follow-up was noted. The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was compared before treatment and at 3, 6, and 12 months after the initial treatment. Changes in the central foveal thickness (CFT), central choroidal thickness (CCT), and retreatment rate during the maintenance phase were also evaluated. RESULTS Eleven eyes were enrolled in this study. Significantly, better BCVA was observed at 12 months than at baseline (P = 0.010). The mean CFT significantly decreased from 331 ± 93 to 237 ± 72 μm at 12 months (P  less then  0.001). The mean CCT also significantly decreased from 361 ± 74 to 310 ± 83 μm at 12 months (P  less then  0.001). The mean number of injections per eye was 3.9 ± 1.3 during the follow-up period. A total of 45.5% (5 /11) of the patients required retreatment during the maintenance phase. CONCLUSION Anti-VEGF combined with full-dose PDT was well tolerated and appeared to be effective treatment for patients with treatment-naïve PNV. Combination therapy might also reduce the treatment burden with fewer injections in patients with PNV.PURPOSE This study aims to assess the pupillometry measurements of the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients and to investigate their correlations with macular and RNFL thickness parameters by comparing the values with a healthy control group. METHODS Newly diagnosed ADHD patients in a child and adolescent clinic of a tertiary hospital were consulted in an ophthalmology clinic. All participants had undergone a standard ophthalmological examination including refractometry, best corrected visual acuity, color vision, anterior segment biomicroscopy, fundoscopy, pupillometry, and OCT. All results were compared with a healthy control group at the same age. RESULTS The study group consisted of 32 patients and there were 43 children in the control group. Mean pupillary velocities of ADHD patients and control group were 0.60 ± 0.11 mm/s and 0.63 ± 0.11 mm/s, and 0.49 ± 0.12 mm/s and 0.50 ± 0.10 mm/s, for right and left eyes, respectively. The difference was statistically significant for both eyes (p  less then  0.05). Mean RNFL thickness measurements of the study group were 90.69 ± 8.58 μm and 89.63 ± 8.14 μm for right and left eyes, respectively and those were 87.35 ± 7.67 μm and 88.77 ± 7.44 μm, respectively in the healthy group. Correlation between right pupillary velocity and RNFL thickness was statistically significant (r = 0.339, p = 0.003). CONCLUSION Higher pupillary velocity values were observed in both eyes of children with ADHD and that was positively correlated with RNFL measurements of their right eyes. The accumulation and transformation of 2,2′,4,4′-tetrabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE47), one congener of the flame retardants polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), in soil-feeding fauna are still unknown. Using radioactivity tracer, we incubated 14C-labelled BDE47 in soil for 21 days in the presence and absence of the geophagous earthworm Metaphire vulgaris. BDE47 accumulated in the earthworm predominantly via oral ingestion of soil, giving a biota-soil accumulation factor (BSAF) value of 1.3 for radioactivity at the end of incubation, and was mostly located in intestine, followed by clitellum (organs region) and skin of earthworms. Accumulation was accompanied by significant decrease of BDE47 concentration in soil porewater and BDE47 mineralization in soil. BDE47 was transformed in the earthworm gut into two metabolites with higher polarities than BDE47. The results provide for the first time insights into accumulation and transformation of lower-brominated congeners of PBDEs in geophagous earthworms, being helpful for environmental risk assessment of PBDEs.
