However, more studies are needed to confirm these findings.Photocatalytic technology has been widely studied by researchers in the field of environmental purification. This technology can not only completely convert organic pollutants into small molecules of CO2 and H2O through redox reactions but also remove metal ions and other inorganic substances from water. This article reviews the research progress of graphene-based photocatalytic nanocomposites in the treatment of wastewater. First, we elucidate the basic principles of photocatalysis, the types of graphene-based nanocomposites, and the role of graphene in photocatalysis (e.g., graphene can accelerate the separation of photon-hole pairs and increase the intensity and range of light absorption). Second, the preparation, characterization, and application of composites in wastewater are introduced. We also discuss the kinetic model of the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. Finally, the enhancement mechanism of graphene in terms of photocatalysis is not completely clear, and graphene-based photocatalysts with high catalytic efficiency, low cost, and large-scale production have not yet appeared, so there is an urgent need for more extensive and in-depth research.Although studies have revealed that ambient particulate matter (PM) has detrimental effects on the ocular surface, there have been limited reports detailing the effect of ambient PM on the posterior segment of the eye. A large-scale longitudinal cohort study evaluating the association between fine PM, especially PM2.5, and the retina could elucidate the risk of ambient pollutants for retinal diseases. We investigated the association between PM2.5 and the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We conducted a population-based cohort study of 4,284,128 participants in Taiwan between 2001 and 2011. PM2.5 was continuously measured by satellites and subsequently assigned to each geographic district along with its postcode. A time-dependent Cox proportional-hazard model was used to assess the overall effects of average PM2.5. We used distributed lag non-linear models to evaluate the dose-response relationship between PM2.5 and AMD development. The annual mean of PM2.5 exposure was 34.23 ± 7.17 μg/m3. The PM2.5 concentrations were highest in spring, followed by those in winter, autumn, and summer. Twelve thousand ninety-five new AMD cases were reported during the study period. After adjusting for covariates, the AMD risk increased by 19% (95% confidence interval 1.13-1.25) for a 10 μg/m3 PM2.5 increase. The present study demonstrated that chronic exposure to PM2.5 increases the risk of AMD. Almost half of the Taiwanese live in a polluted area where the PM2.5 levels are higher than the World Health Organization recommended air quality guideline of 10 μg/m3 had a 1.4-fold risk, which significantly increases concern about their visual health and social burden.Due to its fine particle size, waste marble slurry originating in cutting and processing units mixes into the air after drying, causing environmental and health problems in nearby areas. On the other hand, large amounts of iron particles are generated as metalworking industry waste, affecting the environmental system. In this study, 0%, 10%, and 20% marble powder (instead of cement) and iron particles (instead of fine aggregate) were used in mixtures, and the composites produced were subjected to two different curing periods 7 and 28 days. The physical, mechanical, microstructural, and thermal properties of the fresh and hardened composites were ascertained via bulk density, consistency, porosity, water absorption, capillary water absorption, strength tests, particle size distribution, X-ray diffraction (XRF), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). The results revealed that minimum water absorption (8.5%) and porosity (19.8%) values were achieved in 28-day composites produced with 10% marble-20% iron wastes among all composites. Thus, iron particles substituted for natural aggregates were mainly responsible for the increase in mechanical performance. A maximum flexural strength of 5.9 MPa and a compressive strength of 26.7 MPa were observed in 28-day composites containing 0% marble-20% iron wastes. Furthermore, capillary water absorption tended to decrease with the substitution of 10% marble powder.Research on the poverty risk caused by geological disasters in disaster-prone areas is a useful exploration to coordinate social economic development with disaster prevention and reduction, and is of great significance to the regional sustainable development. Based on statistical data and spatial data, this paper takes Sichuan Province as the typical research area. Remote sensing and geographic information technology are used to study the poverty risk caused by disasters based on the quantitative evaluation of geological disasters risk and regional development level. The spatial differentiation characteristics of poverty risk caused by disasters are explored on the 1 km × 1 km grid scale. The results indicate that (1) the overall risk of geological disasters in Sichuan Province is relatively high, with high and relatively high risk areas accounting for more than 40% and low and relatively low risk areas accounting for less than 30%. The risks in Mountain and Ravine Areas are significantly higher than other areas. (2) The regional development level in Sichuan Province is relatively high, but with significant spatial differences. The development level of high-altitude areas and remote mountainous areas is quite different from that of the Chengdu Plain in the middle Sichuan Province. The uneven development in the east, middle, and west is a prominent problem. (3) The poverty risk caused by disasters is high, and the spatial pattern presents a characteristic of „high in the west and low in the east” with high positive spatial correlation. High-High Cluster Areas are mainly distributed in western and southwestern Sichuan. Low-Low Outlier Areas are mainly distributed in Chengdu Plain and Hilly Areas of Sichuan Basin. High-Low Outlier and Low-High Outlier Areas occupy a relatively small percentage with scattered distribution. This paper provides some theoretical support for policy formulation and management of coordinated development of regional socioeconomic and ecological environment.

The lack of evidence-based recommendations for Cesarean delivery under general anesthesia can lead to practice variability and morbidity, particularly concerning the use of opioids. The goal of this study was to describe the practice for Cesarean delivery performed under general anesthesia and identify predictive factors for opioid use at anesthesia induction and the need for neonatal resuscitation.

We conducted a single-centerhistorical cohort study. We included all adult parturients who underwent Cesarean delivery under general anesthesia between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2016. We excluded patients who received general anesthesia after delivery or with known intrauterine fetal demise. We collected data on anesthetic medication use, maternal comorbidities, neonatal resuscitation, and anesthetic complications. We used logistic regression models to identify predictors of opioid use at anesthesia induction and predictors of neonatal resuscitation.

Two hundred and three patients were included. Propofol was the main induction agent (n = 195), 201 patients received neuromuscular blockers, and 67 received opioids. No maternal factors, including hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (odds ratio [OR], 1.94; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.96 to 3.95; P = 0.06), were predictors of opioid use at induction of anesthesia. No statistical differences were detected between opioid administration groups, except for Cesarean indication, with preeclampsia being the main contributor. Low gestational age (OR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.65 to 0.87; P = 0.002) was the only predictor of neonatal resuscitation.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy were not predictors of opioid use and opioid use was not a predictor of neonatal resuscitation. This suggests opioids could be used for maternal indications.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy were not predictors of opioid use and opioid use was not a predictor of neonatal resuscitation. This suggests opioids could be used for maternal indications.Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) and polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M-protein, and skin changes (POEMS) syndrome are both acquired demyelinating polyneuropathies. We aim to explore the different features of ultrasonographic changes between CIDP and POEMS syndrome. Nerve ultrasonographic studies were performed in 120 patients with CIDP and 34 patients with POEMS syndrome. Cross-sectional areas (CSAs) were measured on the bilateral median nerve, ulnar nerve, and brachial plexus. Nerve conduction studies were performed on median and ulnar nerves to detect motor conduction blocks (CBs). CSAs at all sites were larger in patients with CIDP and POEMS syndrome than in healthy controls. Maximal CSA (median (min to max)) was 14 (6-194) mm2 for median nerve, 9 (4-92) mm2 for ulnar nerve, and 14 (7-199) mm2 for brachial plexus in CIDP and 11 (8-16) mm2 for median nerve, 8.5 (6-13) mm2 for ulnar nerve, and 14 (10-20) mm2 for brachial plexus in POEMS syndrome. The ratio of maximum/minimum CSA of the median nerve was significantly larger in CIDP (2.8 ± 2.8) than in POEMS syndrome (1.7 ± 0.3). CBs or probable CBs were detected in 60 out of 120 CIDP patients but in none of the POEMS syndromes. For distinguishing CIDP and POEMS syndrome, a two-step protocol using CB and maximum/minimum CSA of the median nerve yields a sensitivity of 93% and a specificity of 79%. In conclusion, compared with CIDP, nerve CSA enlargement was more homogeneous along the same nerve in individual POEMS patients, as well as among different POEMS patients. The addition of nerve ultrasound to nerve conduction studies significantly improves the differential diagnosis between the two diseases.Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) is a rare benign non-neoplastic vascular lesion. A typical presentation consists of a subcutaneous nodule that may simulate other clinical entities. Presentation in the oral cavity is uncommon. It is thought to develop as an abnormal proliferative reaction of endothelial cells in a process of impaired thrombogenesis. When endothelial proliferation occurs, a differential diagnosis with a soft tissue sarcoma, in particular an angiosarcoma, should be performed. We report a case of a 68-year-old female patient who presented with a lesion on the upper lip of 3 months’ duration. Surgical resection revealed an IPEH. 1 year later, the patient showed a local recurrence requiring excision with clear margins. Pathological and immunohistochemical features can help us distinguish these lesions from those requiring more aggressive treatment. The gold standard is surgical resection with clear margins. Accurate preoperative diagnosis is essential to avoid overtreatment. Emphasis should be placed on clinical, radiological and histological studies.
