    This study examined three meat-restricted diets-a vegetarian diet, a reduced-meat diet, and a chicken-free diet-with a focus on the differences in lived dietary experiences operationalized using measures such as satisfaction with food-related life and the theory of planned behavior. The data comes from an online survey of a census-balanced sample of 30,000+ U.S. residents. The findings showed that meat reducers are a larger group than suspected and that there was a statistically significant difference in dietary experiences with vegetarians reporting better experiences with their diet. This research speaks to how the type of meat restriction impacts lived experiences.Food insecurity has been associated with decreased household food supplies, which could affect children’s fruit and vegetables intakes and increases their risk of being overweight or obese. The aim of this study was to determine if food insecurity was associated with lower fruit and vegetables consumption and overweight and obesity in children from Mexican fishing communities. A cross-sectional study was 4conducted with 100 elementary-school children aged 6-12 years. A survey that evaluated socioeconomic conditions, food insecurity, and fruits and vegetables consumption was applied. Weight and height were measured. The association between key variables and food insecurity was assessed using linear regression. Sixty-four percent of households experienced food insecurity. Food-insecure children reported lower consumption of fruits and fruits plus vegetables than did their peers with food security (P trend = 0.040 and 0.038, respectively). Food insecurity was also associated with lower chance to meet the recommendation of fruit and vegetable consumption (P trend in logit less then 0.001), but was negatively associated with the prevalence of overweight and obesity (P trend in logit less then 0.001). Food-insecure children had lower fruits and vegetables consumption but were no more likely to be overweight or obese than their food-secure counterparts.To formulate low-protein diets for blue foxes with sufficient amounts of amino acids (AA), AA digestibility and AA requirements of the animals are crucial information. Therefore, a digestibility and nitrogen (N) balance trial was conducted with 20 blue foxes to determine the macronutrient and AA digestibility and N utilisation in low-protein diets supplemented with DL-methionine (Met) and L-histidine (His). In addition, plasma urea and plasma AA were measured. The diets were designated as P24 (control), P20, P20M, P16M and P16MH and contained energy from digestible crude protein (DCP) at 24%, 20% or 16% of total dietary metabolisable energy (ME). The 20% protein level was fed with or without Met and the 16% protein level was fed with Met and with or without His. The apparent total-tract digestibility (ATTD) of crude protein linearly decreased with decreasing dietary protein level. The ATTD of dry matter, organic matter and crude carbohydrates increased when wheat starch was added as a replacement for protein. in low-protein diets with supplemented Met were adequate for adult blue foxes, since the lower protein supply improved N utilisation and did not affect N retention. However, His supplementation failed to reach the designed level and therefore showed no clear results.Endophytic fungi have several well-established beneficial effects on plant health and growth, and are a huge source of bioactive compounds. The endophyte Drechslera sp. strain 678, isolated from the roots of an Australian native grass Neurachne alopecuroidea, demonstrated efficacy against four plant pathogens (Pythium ultimum, Rhizoctonia solani, Botrytis cinerea, Alternaria alternata). In addition, strain 678 was capable of degrading a common additive used in gasoline, known as methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MtBE). Thus, the organic extracts obtained from the culture filtrate of strain 678 were studied. Metabolomic analysis revealed the presence of two major bioactive metabolites, monocerin and an alkynyl substituted epoxycyclohexenone derivative, which showed good antifungal activity. The Drechslera sp. strain 678 and its compounds show promise for applications in biocontrol and bioremediation activities in agriculture or as a remediation option for MtBE contamination in soil.Objective The Diagnostic Infant and Preschool Assessment was revised to include Likert ratings (DIPA-L) to give a broader range of severity ratings that may have greater utility for clinical and research purposes. In addition, the instrument was updated for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th ed. (DSM-5), and two types of Likert ratings-frequency versus problem intensity-were explored for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Concurrent construct validation and test-retest reliability were examined for the five most common disorders seen in very young children in outpatient clinics PTSD, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, separation anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). A sixth disorder, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD), which was created in DSM-5, was tested for the first time. Functional impairment was also examined. Methods The caregivers of 58 two- through six-year-old children (57 mothers and 1 father) ted many acceptable features of a valid and reliable instrument for the assessment of very young children. While the findings are tentative given the small sample size, the DIPA-L is the only diagnostic instrument for young children with a replication, tested in clinic populations, updated for DSM-5, with psychometrics for functional impairment, and has Likert ratings.The Perseverance rover (Mars 2020) is equipped with an instrumental and analytical payload capable of identifying a broad range of organic molecules in geological samples. To determine the efficacy of these analytical techniques in recognizing important ecological and environmental signals in the rock record, this study utilized analogous equipment, including gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, along with macroscopic and petrographic observations, to examine early-middle Cambrian microbialites from the Arrowie Basin, South Australia. Morphological and petrographic observations of these carbonate successions reveal evidence of hypersaline-restricted environments. Microbialites have undergone moderate diagenesis, as supported by XRF data that show mineral assemblages, including celestine and the illitization of smectite. Raman spectral data, carbon preference indices of ∼1, and the methylphenanthrene index place the samples in the prehnite/pumpellyite metamorphic facies. Pristane and phytane are the only biomarkers that were detected in the least thermally mature samples. This research demonstrates a multitechnique approach that can yield significant geological, depositional, paleobiological, and diagenetic information that has important implications for planning future astrobiological exploration.Atmospheric organic hazes are common in planetary bodies in our solar system and likely exoplanet atmospheres as well. In addition, geochemical data support the existence of an organic haze in the early Earth’s atmosphere. Much of what is known about organic haze formation derives from studies of Saturn’s moon Titan. It is believed that on Titan ions play an important role in haze formation. It is possible, by using Titan as an analog for the Archean Earth, to consider that an Archean haze could have formed by similar processes. Here, we examine the anion chemistry that occurs during laboratory simulations of early Earth haze formation and measure the composition of gaseous anions as a function of O2 mixing ratio. Gaseous anion composition and relative abundances are measured by an atmospheric pressure interface time-of-flight mass spectrometer and are compared to previous photochemical haze mass loading measurements. Numerous anions are observed spanning from mass-to-charge ratio 26 to 246, with a majority of the identified anions containing carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and/or oxygen. A shift in the anion composition occurs with increasing the precursor O2 mixing ratio. With 0-20 ppmv O2 in CH4/CO2/N2 mixtures, ions contain mostly organic nitrogen, with CNO- being the most intense ion peak. As the precursor O2 is increased to 200 and 2000 ppmv, inorganic nitrogen ions become the dominant chemical group, with NO3- having the most intense ion signal. The clear shift in the ionic composition could be indicative of a modification to the gas-phase chemistry that occurs in the transition from an anoxic atmosphere to an oxygen-containing atmosphere, with potential astrobiological significance.INTRODUCTION Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is an important diagnostic tool used preoperatively for the diagnosis of parotid lump. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma comprises 5-10% of all salivary gland tumours. It poses a diagnostic challenge on FNAC with high false negative rate. The objective of this study was to evaluate the discordance between cytology/FNAC and histopathology in patients with mucoepidermoid carcinoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2014. Patients aged 18 years and above with FNAC or histopathology suggestive of mucoepidermoid carcinoma were identified. FNAC when compared with histology (gold standard) was classified into true positive (presence of mucoepidermoid carcinoma correctly diagnosed on FNAC), true negative (absence of mucoepidermoid carcinoma correctly diagnosed on FNAC), false positive (FNAC incorrectly diagnosed mucoepidermoid carcinoma), false negative (FNAC failed to diagnose mucoepidermoid carcinoma). RESULTS A total of 16 patients fulfilled our eligibility criteria. Seven cytological samples were true positive (ie correctly diagnosed mucoepidermoid carcinoma by FNAC), eight cytological specimens were false negative (ie could not pick up mucoepidermoid carcinoma on FNAC). One case was false positive on cytology (ie diagnosed mucoepidermoid carcinoma on FNAC but was reported to be Warthin’s tumour on histopathology) and none were true negative. CONCLUSION FNAC is not reliable for diagnosis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma. More than 50% of our patients had discordant results between cytology and histology. We recommend a high index of suspicion for mucoepidermoid carcinoma given the poor yield of cytology.Objective This study aimed at investigating the specific roles of laminarin from seaweed (Laminaria japonica) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its potential mechanisms related to senescence marker protein-30 (SMP-30). Materials and Methods Human HCC cell lines, including Bel-7404 and HepG2, were incubated with different concentrations of laminarin (0, 5, 15, 25, 35, and 45 mg/mL). The cell viability and apoptosis rates were detected by WST-8 cell proliferation assay and flow cytometry, respectively. Hepa 1-6 tumor-bearing mice were injected with different concentrations of laminarin (400, 800, and 1200 mg/kg·d), and tumor volume and weight were measured. The expression of SMP-30 was detected in laminarin-treated Bel-7404 and HepG2 HCC cells and LO2 normal liver cells by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blotting. Results The treatment with laminarin (48 h) significantly decreased the viability and increased the apoptosis rates of Bel-7404 and HepG2 cells in a dose-dependent manner. The injection of laminarin also significantly decreased the tumor volumes (beginning on the 10th day) and tumor weights (30 d post-injection) of mice in a dose-dependent manner.
