    Two different structuring modes, including discrete and continuous APPS, are explored for 2D/3D patterns. A series of structuring experiments show that different kinds of 2D patterns (including square lens array, hexagon lens array and groove array) as well as complex 3D phase plate patterns have been successfully fabricated, which validates the effectiveness of the proposed APPS of 2D/3D patterns on fused silica optics.A search for magnetised quark nuggets (MQN) is reported using acoustic signals from hydrophones placed in the Great Salt Lake (GSL) in the USA. No events satisfying the expected signature were seen. This observation allows limits to be set on the flux of MQNs penetrating the Earth’s atmosphere and depositing energy in the GSL. The expected signature of the events was derived from pressure pulses caused by high-explosive cords between the lake surface and bottom at various locations in the GSL. The limits obtained from this search are compared with those obtained from previous searches and are compared to models for the formation of MQNs.Whether lactate clearance (LC) influences outcomes differently depending on the infection site in sepsis cases is not fully elucidated. Herein, we analyzed LC’s clinical utility as a predictor of patient outcomes according to infection site. This retrospective study, conducted at two tertiary emergency critical care medical centers in Japan, included patients with sepsis or septic shock. The associations between infection site (lungs vs. other organs) and in-hospital mortality and ventilator-free days (VFDs) were evaluated using univariable and multivariate analyses. We assessed LC’s ability to predict in-hospital mortality using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. Among 369 patients with sepsis, infection sites were as follows lungs, 186 (50.4%); urinary tract, 45 (12.2%); abdomen, 102 (27.6%); and other, 36 (9.8%). Patients were divided into a pneumonia group or non-pneumonia group depending on their infection site. The pneumonia group displayed a higher in-hospital mortality than the non-pneumonia group (24.2% vs. 15.8%, p = 0.051). In the multivariate analysis, lower LC was associated with higher in-hospital mortality [adjusted odds ratio (AOR), 0.97; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.96-0.98; p  less then  0.001] and fewer VFD [adjusted difference p value (AD), - 1.23; 95% CI - 2.42 to - 0.09; p = 0.025] in the non-pneumonia group. Conversely, LC did not affect in-hospital mortality (AOR 0.99; 95% CI 0.99-1.00; p = 0.134) and VFD (AD - 0.08; 95% CI - 2.06 to 1.91; p = 0.854) in the pneumonia group. Given the differences in the impact of LC on outcomes between the pneumonia and non-pneumonia groups, this study suggests that optimal treatment strategies might improve outcomes. Further studies are warranted to validate our results and develop optimal therapeutic strategies for sepsis patients.We tried to identify the interaction between dietary quality indices and apolipoprotein B Ins/Del and EcoR1 polymorphisms on biochemical and anthropometric factors in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This cross-sectional study recruited 700 adults with T2DM in Tehran. The genotypes of Ins/Del and EcoR1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) were explored via polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Dietary quality index-international (DQI-I), healthy eating index-2015 (HEI-2015) and dietary phytochemical index (DPI) were calculated by semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). In both crude and adjusted model for confounding factors, we observed significant interactions between DQI-I and Ins/Del SNP on leptin in and 8-iso-prostaglandin F2 α (8-iso-PGF2α), DPI and EcoR1 SNP on total cholesterol (TC) and between Ins/Del SNP and HEI-2015 on interleukin-18 (IL-18). Furthermore, in crude model there were close to meaningful interactions between EcoR1 SNP and DQI-I on total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and between EcoR1 SNP and HEI-2015 on serum leptin and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels. Our finding indicated that the association between DQI-I, HEI-2015 and DPI with IL-18, TC, leptin and 8-iso-PGF2α in patients with T2DM might be dependent on Ins/Del and EcoR1 variants in ApoB gene.Polypharmacy is common in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), making these patients vulnerable to the occurrence of potential drug-drug interactions (DDIs). We assessed the risk of ischemic stroke and major bleeding in the context of concomitant treatment with potential DDIs in patients with AF prescribed direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). Using the common data model (CDM) based on an electronic health record (EHR) database, we included new users of DOACs from among patients treated for AF between January 2014 and December 2017 (n = 1938). The median age was 72 years, and 61.8% of the patients were males, with 28.2% of the patients having a CHA2DS2-VASc score in category 0-1, 49.4% in category 2-3, and 22.4% in category ≥ 4. The CHA2DS2-VASc score was significantly associated with ischemic stroke occurrence and hospitalization for major bleeding. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that increased risk of ischemic stroke and hospitalization for major bleeding was associated with the number of DDIs regardless of comorbidities ≥ 2 DDIs was associated with ischemic stroke (OR = 18.68; 95% CI, 6.22-55.27, P  less then  0.001) and hospitalization for major bleeding (OR = 5.01; 95% CI, 1.11-16.62, P  less then  0.001). DDIs can cause reduced antithrombotic efficacy or increased risk of bleeding in AF patients prescribed DOACs.Cisplatin (CDDP) induces senescence characterized by senescence-associated secretory phenotypes (SASP) and the unfolded protein response (UPR). In this study, we investigated the proteins related to the UPR during the senescence cell fate. Strikingly, we found that one of the critical ER-resident proteins, GRP78/BiP, was significantly altered. Here we show that GRP78 levels differentially expressed depending on non-small lung cancer subtypes. GRP78 indeed regulates the evasion of senescence in adenocarcinoma A549 cells, in which the increased GRP78 levels enable them to re-proliferate after CDDP removal. Conversely, GRP78 is downregulated in the senescence H460 cells, making them lacking senescence evasion capability. We observed that the translational regulation critically contributed to the GRP78 protein levels in CDDP-induces senescence. Furthermore, the increased GRP78 level during senescence confers resistance to senolytic drug, Bortezomib, as observed by a twofold increase in IC50 in A549 senescence cells compared to the wild-type. This observation is also consistent in the cells that have undergone genetic manipulation by transfection with pcDNA3.1(+)-GRP78/BiP plasmids and pSpCas9(BB)-2A-Puro containing guide RNA sequence targeting GRP78 exon 3 to induce the overexpression and downregulation of GRP78 in H460 cells, respectively. Our findings reveal a unique role of GRP78 on the senescence evasion cell fate and senolytic drug resistance after cisplatin-based chemotherapy.This research focuses on the investigation of the effect of a new light emitting diode (LED)-lighting system which reproduces indoor museum conditions, on some self-made art paint colours (acrylic-, alkyd-, and linseed oil-based paints) often used in modern-contemporary art. A halogen lamp representing a traditional light source for museum lighting was also considered. Lighting-set-up and lighting optimization parameters were considered while Ultraviolet/Visible/Near Infrared (UV/Vis/NIR) spectrophotometry was used for investigating the colour change of the paint samples. Univariate analyses allowed determining the highest effect of the lighting systems on the linseed oil binder and ultramarine blue PB29 mixture upon ageing, according to the highest total colour change ΔE*ab. In a more specific and detailed way, variance analyses not only demonstrated the strong correlation between the type of binder and pigment used for the paint samples with the colour variation, but also showed that the short-wavelength blue LEDs influenced the change along the yellow-blue b* axis of the yellow and blue samples, whereas the halogen lamp mostly had an impact towards the red-green a* axis of mostly the green specimens.Rodents are among the most successful mammals because they have the ability to adapt to a broad range of environmental conditions. Here, we present the first record of a previously unknown thermal adaptation to cold stress that repeatedly occurred in two species of non-commensal rodents (Apodemus flavicollis and Apodemus agrarius). The classic rodent literature implies that rodents prevent heat loss via a broad range of behavioral adaptations including sheltering, sitting on their tails, curling into a ball, or huddling with conspecifics. Here, we have repeatedly observed an undescribed behavior which we refer to as „tail-belting”. This behavior was performed under cold stress, whereby animals lift and curl the tail medially, before resting it on the dorsal, medial rump while feeding or resting. We documented 115 instances of the tail-belting behavior; 38 in Apodemus agrarius, and 77 in Apodemus flavicollis. Thermal imaging data show the tails remained near ambient temperature even when temperatures were below 0 °C. Since the tail-belting occurred only when the temperature dropped below – 6.9 °C (for A. flavicollis) and – 9.5 °C (for A. agrarius), we surmise that frostbite prevention may be the primary reason for this adaptation. It is likely that tail-belting has not previously been documented because free-ranging mice are rarely-recorded in the wild under extreme cold conditions. Given that these animals are so closely-related to laboratory rodents, this knowledge could potentially be relevant to researchers in various disciplines. We conclude by setting several directions for future research in this area.The development of outcome measures that can track the recovery of reinnervated muscle would benefit the clinical investigation of new therapies which hope to enhance peripheral nerve repair. The primary objective of this study was to assess the validity of volumetric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as an outcome measure of muscle reinnervation by testing its reproducibility, responsiveness and relationship with clinical indices of muscular function. Over a 3-year period 25 patients who underwent nerve transfer to reinnervate elbow flexor muscles were assessed using intramuscular electromyography (EMG) and MRI (median post-operative assessment time of 258 days, ranging from 86 days pre-operatively to 1698 days post- operatively). Muscle power (Medical Research Council (MRC) grade) and Stanmore Percentage of Normal Elbow Assessment (SPONEA) assessment was also recorded for all patients. Sub-analysis of peak volitional force (PVF), muscular fatigue and co-contraction was performed in those patients with MRC > e for muscle reinnervation which will drive advancements in motor recovery therapy.Inferring the interactions between coupled oscillators is a significant open problem in complexity science, with multiple interdisciplinary applications. While the Kalman filter (KF) technique is a well-known tool, widely used for data assimilation and parameter estimation, to the best of our knowledge, it has not yet been used for inferring the connectivity of coupled chaotic oscillators. Here we demonstrate that KF allows reconstructing the interaction topology and the coupling strength of a network of mutually coupled Rössler-like chaotic oscillators. We show that the connectivity can be inferred by considering only the observed dynamics of a single variable of the three that define the phase space of each oscillator. We also show that both the coupling strength and the network architecture can be inferred even when the oscillators are close to synchronization. Simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method.
