Titles/abstracts and full texts of studies will be assessed against the inclusion criteria, and the data extracted by two independent reviewers. Based on the results, we will compare the types of AsTs according to the research designs, country/settings, intervention methods/materials, adverse effects reported, and therapeutic outcomes related to AsTs.Aspergillus fumigatus is the main causative agent of Invasive Aspergillosis. This mold produces conidia that when inhaled by immunocompromized hosts can be deposited in the lungs and germinate, triggering disease. In this paper, the development of a method using peptide nucleic acid-fluorescence in situ hybridization (PNA-FISH) is described. The PNA-FISH probe was tested in several strains and a specificity and sensitivity of 100% was obtained. Detection of A. fumigatussensu stricto was then achieved in artificial sputum medium (ASM) pre-inoculated with 1 × 102 conidia·mL-1-1 × 103 conidia·mL-1, after a germination step of 24 h. The PNA-FISH method was evaluated in 24 clinical samples (10 sputum, 8 bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), and 6 bronchial lavage (BL)) that were inoculated with 1 × 104 conidia·mL-1 in sputum; 1 × 103 conidia·mL-1 in BL and BAL, for 24 h. Despite a specificity of 100%, the sensitivity was 79%. This relatively low sensitivity can be explained by the fact that hyphae can yield „fungal ball” clusters, hindering pipetting procedures and subsequent detection, leading to false negative results. Nonetheless, this study showed the potential of the PNA-FISH method for A. fumigatussensu stricto detection since it takes only 1 h 30 m to perform the procedure with a pre-enrichment step of 6 h (pure cultures) and 24 h (clinical samples), and might provide a suitable alternative to the existing methods for studies in pure cultures and in clinical settings. The structure formed by cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) and cobalt octaethylporphyrin (CoOEP) with electron-acceptor tetracyano-π-quinodimethane (TCNQ), was studied by Density Functional Theory (DFT) methods. According to theoretical calculations, both cobalt systems can establish dispersion forces related to TCNQ and also in both cases the link between them is built by means of hydrogen bonds. Based on the results of these DFT calculations, we developed experimental work the organic semiconductors were doped, and the thermal evaporation technique was used to prepare semiconductor thin films of such compounds. The structure of the films was studied by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. The optical properties of the CoPc-TCNQ and CoOEP-TCNQ films were investigated by means of UV-Vis measurements. The results obtained were used to estimate the type of transitions and the optical bandgap. The results were compared to the previously calculated theoretical bandgap. The CoOEP-TCNQ film presented the smallest theoretical and experimental bandgap. Finally, the electrical properties of the organic semiconductors were evaluated from a PET (polyethylene terephthalate)/indium tin oxide (ITO)/cobalt macrocycle-TCNQ/silver (Ag) device we prepared. The CoOEP-TCNQ-based device showed an ohmic behavior. The device manufactured from CoPc-TCNQ also showed an ohmic behavior at low voltages, but significantly changed to SCLC (space-charge limited conductivity) at high voltage values. Background The aim of the study was to evaluate pre-operative and post-operative retinal vasculature using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in patients who underwent rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) surgery repair. Materials and Methods A total of 33 eyes were included in this prospective consecutive observational study 15 affected by macula-ON and 18 by macula-OFF RRD. Superficial (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), and foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area variations were evaluated by OCTA and correlated with visual acuity (VA) during a six-month follow-up. Results In the macula-ON group, the preoperative vascular density (VD) of the whole SCP (wSCP) on affected eyes was lower than that of the fellow eyes (p less then 0.05); this difference disappeared at 6 months after surgery (p = 0.88). The wSCP VD and the parafoveal SCP (pfSCP) VD increased during follow-up (p less then 0.05); moreover, the higher the preoperative wSCP and pfSCP VD, the better the baseline VA (p less then 0.05). In the macula-OFF group, at the first and sixth months after surgery, the larger the FAZ, the lower the VA (p less then 0.05). Conclusions Macula-ON SCP VD affected preoperative VA, and it was lower than the fellow eye, but recovered over time. In the macula-OFF group, a larger FAZ area was related to a worse VA, as is the case in diabetes and in retinal vein occlusion (RVO).In this work, a semi-submersible piezoelectric energy harvester was used to provide power to a low-cost 4G Arduino shield. Initially, unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS)-based simulations were conducted to investigate the dynamic forces under different conditions. An adaptive differential evolution (JADE) multivariable optimization algorithm was used for the power calculations. After JADE optimization, a communication cycle was designed. The shield works in two modes communication and power saving. The power-saving mode is active for 285 s and the communication mode for 15 s. This cycle consumes a determinate amount of power, which requires a specific piezoelectric material and, in some situations, an extra power device, such as a battery or supercapacitor. The piezoelectric device is able to work at the maximum power point using a specific Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) H-bridge controlled with a relay action. For the extra power supply, a bidirectional buck-boost converter was implemented to flow the energy in both directions. This electronic circuit was simulated to compare the extra power supply and the piezoelectric energy harvester behavior. Promising results were obtained in terms of power production and energy storage. We used 0.59, 0.67 and 1.69 W piezoelectric devices to provide the energy for the 4G shield and extra power supply device.Applied machine learning in bioinformatics is growing as computer science slowly invades all research spheres. With the arrival of modern next-generation DNA sequencing algorithms, metagenomics is becoming an increasingly interesting research field as it finds countless practical applications exploiting the vast amounts of generated data. This study aims to scope the scientific literature in the field of metagenomic classification in the time interval 2008-2019 and provide an evolutionary timeline of data processing and machine learning in this field. This study follows the scoping review methodology and PRISMA guidelines to identify and process the available literature. Natural Language Processing (NLP) is deployed to ensure efficient and exhaustive search of the literary corpus of three large digital libraries IEEE, PubMed, and Springer. The search is based on keywords and properties looked up using the digital libraries’ search engines. The scoping review results reveal an increasing number of research papers related to metagenomic classification over the past decade. The research is mainly focused on metagenomic classifiers, identifying scope specific metrics for model evaluation, data set sanitization, and dimensionality reduction. Out of all of these subproblems, data preprocessing is the least researched with considerable potential for improvement.Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAS) are known endocrine disrupting chemicals, potentially affecting thyroid function. Smoking has been associated with PFAS levels as well as with thyroid function. The impact of smoking on the association between PFAS and thyroid function remains to be elucidated, so the objective was to assess the effect of PFAS exposure on thyroid function in the general population, stratified by smoking status, using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). NHANES adult participants who were part of the 2011-2012 laboratory subsample and had PFAS and thyroid function measured were included (n = 1325). Adjusted linear regression models and stratified analyses were performed. There was a significant positive association between perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) (p = 0.003), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) (p = 0.014), total PFAS (p = 0.004) concentrations and free T4 (FT4). No significant associations were found between perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), PFOS, perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), PFNA, total PFAS and total T4 (TT4) or thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). In non-smokers, a significant positive association was found between PFOS (p = 0.003), PFHxS (p = 0.034), PFNA (p = 0.012), total PFAS (p = 0.003) and FT4 while no significant associations were found in smokers. The present study showed that increased PFAS exposure was associated with increased FT4 in non-smokers, while no association was found in smokers. These results confirm that smoking modifies the association between PFAS exposure and thyroid function. This paper presents an experimental study about the preparation, by electrospinning, of uranium carbide fibers with nanometric grain size. Viscous solutions of cellulose acetate and uranyl salts (acetate, acetylacetonate, and formate) on acetic acid and 2,4-pentanedione, adjusted to three different polymer concentrations, 10, 12.5, and 15 weight %, were used for electrospinning. Good quality precursor fibers were obtained from solutions with a 15% cellulose acetate concentration, the best ones being produced from the uranyl acetate solution. As-spun precursor fibers were then decomposed by slow heating until 823 K under argon, resulting in a mixture of nano-grained UO2 and C fibers. A last carboreduction was then carried out under vacuum at 2073 K for 2 h. The final material displayed UC2-y as the major phase, with grain sizes in the 4 nm-10 nm range. UO2+x was still present in moderate concentrations (~30 vol.%). This is due to uncomplete carboreduction that can be explained by the fiber morphology, limiting the effective contact between C and UO2 grains.Asymptomatic bacterial vaginosis (BV) in reproductive-age women has serious obstetric and gynecological consequences. Despite its high incidence, the behavior of vaginal lactobacilli in asymptomatic BV is unknown. We analyzed the functional properties of previously isolated vaginal lactobacilli from asymptomatic women with normal, intermediate, and BV microbiota. Lactic acid and antimicrobial activity against seven urogenital pathogens were evaluated from lactobacilli cell-free culture supernatants (CFCs) (n = 207) after 48 h incubation in MRS. Lactobacilli isolates were used to evaluate H2O2, autoaggregation and coaggregation with C. albicans. Lactobacilli from normal microbiota produced more d-lactate than lactobacilli from intermediate and asymptomatic BV (p = 0.007). L. plantarum, L. fermentum and L. reuteri produced greater d-lactate whereas L. rhamnosus, L. crispatus, L. johnsonii were greater producers of l-lactate. Interspecies positive correlation was observed in the lactic acid contents of CFCs. Distribution of H2O2-producing lactobacilli did not vary significantly among the groups. When lactic acid isomers were considered, species from intermediate and BV microbiota clustered together with each other and distinctly from species of normal microbiota. Broad-spectrum antagonism (≥90% inhibition) against E. coli, C. albicans, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, G. vaginalis, N. gonorrhoeae, S. agalactiae were displayed by 46.86% (97) of isolates. Our study highlights the differential functional properties of vaginal lactobacilli from women with normal microbiota and asymptomatic BV.
