lucorum attack.We report a bubble-propelled Janus gallium/zinc (Ga/Zn) micromotor with good biocompatibility and biodegradability for active target treatment of bacteria. The Janus Ga/Zn micromotors are fabricated by asymmetrically coating liquid metal Ga on Zn microparticles and display self-propulsion in simulated gastroenteric acid (pH 0.5) at a speed of up to 383 μm s-1 , propelled by hydrogen bubbles generated by the zinc-acid reaction. This motion of Ga/Zn micromotors is enhanced by the Ga-Zn galvanic effect. The GaIII cations produced from the degradation of Ga/Zn micromotors serve as a built-in antibiotic agent. The movement improves the diffusion of GaIII and results in a significant increase of the antibacterial efficiency against H. pylori, compared with passive Ga microparticles. Such Ga/Zn micromotors combine the self-propulsion, good biocompatibility and biodegradability, and Ga-based antibacterial properties, providing a proof of concept for the active treatment of bacterial infections.
To evaluate the impact of pre-intensive care unit admission (pre-ICU) statin use on all-cause in-hospital mortality and ICU length of stay (LOS).
Retrospective cohort study.
Adult ICUs at tertiary hospitals.
Adult critically ill patients diagnosed with sepsis admitted to the ICUs.
The exposure was pre-ICU statin prescription (statin users); unexposed represented absence of pre-ICU prescription (non-users).
We used the 2001-2012 Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-III (MIMIC-III) database to determine average treatment effect (ATE) of pre-ICU statin use on 30-day ICU mortality, ICU LOS, and 30-day in-hospital mortality using the Augmented Inverse Propensity Weighted technique (AIPW), after adjusting for confounding factors (age, race, health insurance, corticosteroids use, vital signs, laboratory tests, and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score (SOFA). We measured 30-day ICU mortality as deaths within 30days of admission to the ICU, and ICU LOS was measured in fractional days. A 30-day ds to the totality of evidence on the pleiotropic effect of statin use in patients with sepsis.
Among patients with sepsis admitted to the medical ICU, pre-ICU statin use is causally associated with a decrease in 30-day ICU mortality, ICU LOS, and 30-day in-hospital mortality compared to non-use. While variation in body mass and therefore juvenile viability may be explained by genetic and environmental factors, emerging evidence points to the gut microbiota as an important factor influencing host health. The gut microbiota is known to change during development, but it remains unclear whether the microbiome predicts fitness, and if it does, at which developmental stage it affects fitness traits. We collected data on two traits associated with fitness in wild nestling great tits Parus major weight and survival to fledging. We characterised the gut microbiome using 16S rRNA sequencing from nestling faeces and investigated temporal associations between the gut microbiome and fitness traits across development at Day-8 (D8) and Day-15 (D15) post-hatching. We also explored whether particular microbial taxa were 'indicator species’ that reflected whether nestlings survived or not. There was no link between mass and microbial diversitfuture hypothesis testing to pinpoint which features of the gut microbial community impact on host fitness, and when during development this occurs. Such confirmatory research will shed light on population level processes and could have the potential to support conservation.
Changes in corticospinal excitability prior to a contraction may depend on its characteristics, including the rate of torque development. This study compared the specific modulation of cortical and spinal excitability during the preparation phase (last 500ms before contraction) of fast (ballistic) and ramp contractions of ankle dorsiflexors, using transcranial magnetic stimulation and peripheral nerve stimulation. The results indicate earlier changes at the cortical than at the spinal level during the preparation phase of both contraction types. However, these adjustments are delayed prior to ballistic relative to ramp contractions. This study suggests that the time course of change in cortical and spinal excitability during the preparation phase of a voluntary action is specific to the intended rate of torque development of the upcoming contraction.

To evaluate the measurement properties of all three domains of the Migraine-Specific Quality of Life questionnaire version 2.1 (MSQ v2.1) electronic patient-reported outcome (ePRO) to assess the functional impact of migraine in patients with episodic or chronic migraine (CM); and identify meaningful within-patient change thresholds for the Role Function-Restrictive (RFR), Role Function-Preventive (RFP), and Emotional Function (EF) domains.
Data were drawn from three double-blind, placebo-controlled, and randomized Phase 3 clinical studies (episodic migraine [EM] EVOLVE-1 and EVOLVE-2; CM REGAIN). The psychometric properties of the MSQ v2.1 ePRO domains were demonstrated by evaluating reliability (internal consistency and test-retest), construct validity (convergent and known groups), and responsiveness. Meaningful within-patient change thresholds for domains were estimated using anchor-based approaches, supplemented by empirical cumulative distribution function curves and probability density function plotdies. The 3-month meaningful within-patient change thresholds were the same for EM and CM for RFP 20.00 and EF 26.67; and for RFR 25.71.
These findings demonstrate that all three domains of the MSQ v2.1 ePRO have sufficient reliability, validity, responsiveness, and appropriate interpretation standards. Our results suggest that MSQ v2.1 ePRO is a well-defined and reliable patient-reported outcome instrument that is suitable for use in clinical studies for evaluating the impact of migraine on patient functioning in episodic and CM.

Irradiation of red blood cells (RBCs) inactivates residual donor T lymphocytes to prevent transfusion-associated graft-vs-host disease (TA-GVHD) but can have adverse effects on recipients and inventory management. Reported incidence of TA-GVHD is lower when leukoreduced RBCs and older blood products are transfused; therefore, the impact of leukoreduction and storage was evaluated as an alternative prevention strategy.
Effectiveness of leukoreduction filters on white blood cell (WBC) proliferation was evaluated by filtering buffy coat (BC) products and isolating residual WBCs. Additionally, leukoreduced RBCs were spiked with 5 × 10
WBCs on Day 21 of hypothermic storage, then stored and processed on Days 7, 14, and 21 to obtain residual WBCs to investigate the impact of hypothermic storage on their viability and proliferative ability. Viability of residual WBCs was assessed by staining with annexin V and an antibody cocktail for flow cytometry analysis. Proliferative ability was assessed by placing carboxyfluorescein diacetate succinimidyl ester-labeled residual WBCs into culture for 6 days with phytohemagglutinin before flow cytometry assessment.
Filtration of BC units depleted WBCs, particularly T lymphocytes, to 0.001% ± 0.003% cells/unit, although proliferative activity remained consistent with prefiltration levels of WBCs. WBCs in stored RBCs remained viable even on Day 21 of storage; however, the proliferative activity decreased to 0.24% ± 0.41%.

To date, it is poorly understood how B accumulation in grain crops is genetically controlled. Here, we assessed the genotypic variation of the B concentration in grains of a spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) association panel that represents broad genetic diversity. We found a large genetic variation of the grain B concentration and detected in total 23 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) using genome-wide association mapping. HvNIP2;2/HvLsi6, encoding a potential B-transporting membrane protein, mapped closely to a major-effect QTL accounting for the largest proportion of grain B variation. Based on transport studies using heterologous expression systems and gene expression analysis, we demonstrate that HvNIP2;2/HvLsi6 represents a functional B channel and that expression variation in its transcript level associates with root and shoot B concentrations as well as with root dry mass formation under B-deficient conditions.
This study aims to explore illness perception and coping style in relation to health behaviour and the mediating role of coping style between illness perception and health behaviour among stroke patients.
Cross-sectional study.
This survey was conducted with 515 stroke patients aged ≥18years from September 2019 to January 2020 in Zhengzhou, China. The demographic and clinical characteristics questionnaire, Stroke Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised, Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire, and Health Behavior Scale for Stroke Patients were included in this study. Data analysis was performed by correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis, and structural equation modelling.
The valid questionnaires were 495 (effective response rate 96.1%). Low negative illness perception, high positive coping style, and low negative coping style are related to high level of health promoting behaviour (all p<0.01). The results revealed that the effect of illness perception on health behaviour was partly mediated by coping style. It also confirmed that the mediation effect accounts for 43.7% (-0.169/-0.387) of the total effect.
Illness perception may influence health behaviour partly because of coping style.
This study implies that targeted interventions for stroke patients’ illness perception are needed to motivate them to take proactive coping strategy to ultimately improve their health behaviours.
