In contrast, no difference was detected in growth performance. Significant positive correlations between the cortisol level and serotonergic activity were observed in the short-term contest, but the serotonergic activity was negatively correlated with the aggressive behavior in the long-term contest. These results suggest that subordinate hierarchy inhibits aggression but does not impact growth in black rockfish. The cortisol-related change in brain monoaminergic activity could be a potential indicator to predict aggressive behavior in black rockfish in captivity with an obvious social hierarchy.The developmental psychopathology clinical and theoretical framework has proposed a bio-psycho-social model that integrates biological, environmental, social, and psychological factors to disentangle the underpinning mechanisms of the intergenerational transmission of psychopathological risk […].Control of Theileria equi, the primary cause of equine theileriosis, is largely reliant on acaracide use and chemosterilization with imidocarb dipropionate (ID). However, it is currently unknown if ID is effective against Theileria haneyi, the recently identified second causative agent of equine theileriosis, or if the drug maintains effectiveness against T. equi in the presence of T. haneyi co-infection. The purpose of this study was to address these questions using ID treatment of the following three groups of horses (1) five T. haneyi infected horses; (2) three T. haneyi-T. equi infected horses; and (3) three T. equi-T. haneyi infected horses. Clearance was first evaluated using nPCR for each Theileria sp. on peripheral blood samples. ID failed to clear T. haneyi in all three groups of horses, and failed to clear T. equi in two of three horses in group two. For definitive confirmation of infection status, horses in groups two and three underwent splenectomy post-treatment. The T. equi-nPCR-positive horses in group two developed severe clinical signs and were euthanized. Remaining horses exhibited moderate signs consistent with T. haneyi. Our results demonstrate that ID therapy lacks efficacy against T. haneyi, and T. haneyi-T. equi co-infection may interfere with ID clearance of T. equi.Disposable electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) became popular among youth after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) implemented an enforcement policy to restrict the sale of cartridge-based flavored e-cigarettes starting from February 2020 in the United States (US). We aimed to examine the flavors and topics related to disposable e-cigarettes on Twitter. The Twitter dataset, which includes 1489 tweets, was collected by the Tweepy streamapplication programming interface (API) using a keyword query from March to September 2020. The disposable e-cigarette flavors were curated from both online stores and collected tweets. Topics related to disposable e-cigarettes on Twitter were manually coded. Distributions of topics were compared between tweets from the US and tweets from non-US countries. The temporal analysis results showed a slight increase in the number of discussions over the study period. Strawberry, mango, watermelon, and mint were the most popular flavors of disposable e-cigarettes mentioned on Twitter. Almost all the tweets (97.11%) were commercial tweets, which were dominated by topics related to the product and flavor promotions. The US tweets focused more on product and flavor promotions and less on price promotions compared to non-US tweets. Our results suggest that companies exploited the limitations of legislation to promote flavors on Twitter, which could undermine public health and young people’s finances if they get hooked on addictive products.Decellularized tissue is an important source for biological tissue engineering. Evaluation of the quality of decellularized tissue is performed using scanned images of hematoxylin-eosin stained (H&E) tissue sections and is usually dependent on the observer. The first step in creating a tool for the assessment of the quality of the liver scaffold without observer bias is the automatic segmentation of the whole slide image into three classes the background, intralobular area, and extralobular area. Such segmentation enables to perform the texture analysis in the intralobular area of the liver scaffold, which is crucial part in the recellularization procedure. Existing semi-automatic methods for general segmentation (i.e., thresholding, watershed, etc.) do not meet the quality requirements. Moreover, there are no methods available to solve this task automatically. Given the low amount of training data, we proposed a two-stage method. The first stage is based on classification of simple hand-crafted descriptors of the pixels and their neighborhoods. This method is trained on partially annotated data. Its outputs are used for training of the second-stage approach, which is based on a convolutional neural network (CNN). Our architecture inspired by U-Net reaches very promising results, despite a very low amount of the training data. We provide qualitative and quantitative data for both stages. With the best training setup, we reach 90.70% recognition accuracy.In this paper, we propose a solvent-free device fabrication method using a melt-blown (MB) fiber to minimize potential chemical and thermal damages to transition-metal-dichalcogenides (TMDCs)-based semiconductor channel. The fabrication process is composed of three steps; (1) MB fibers alignment as a shadow mask, (2) metal deposition, and (3) lifting-up MB fibers. The resulting WSe2-based p-type metal-oxide-semiconductor (PMOS) device shows an ON/OFF current ratio of ~2 × 105 (ON current of ~-40 µA) and a remarkable linear hole mobility of ~205 cm2/V·s at a drain voltage of -0.1 V. These results can be a strong evidence supporting that this MB fiber-assisted device fabrication can effectively suppress materials damage by minimizing chemical and thermal exposures. Followed by an MoS2-based n-type MOS (NMOS) device demonstration, a complementary MOS (CMOS) inverter circuit application was successfully implemented, consisted of an MoS2 NMOS and a WSe2 PMOS as a load and a driver transistor, respectively. This MB fiber-based device fabrication can be a promising method for future electronics based on chemically reactive or thermally vulnerable materials.Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are considered prebiotics and have been widely used in various food industries as additives. Ultrasonication has been widely used to enhance food processes; however, there are few reports on ultrasound-assisted FOS synthesis. In the present study, FOS were produced from brown sugar using ultrasonication combined with microbubbles, and the production was optimised using a Box-Behnken experimental design. Here we showed that a combination of ultrasonication and microbubbles could boost the enzyme activity by 366%, and the reaction time was shortened by 60%. The reaction time was a significant variable affecting the FOS production. The optimum conditions were 5 min 45 s of ultrasonication and 7 min 19 s of microbubbles with a reaction time of 5 h 40 min. The maximum enzyme activity and total FOS yield were 102.51 ± 4.69 U·mL-1 and 494.89 ± 19.98 mg·g-1 substrate, respectively. In an enlarged production scale up to 5 L, FOS yields were slightly decreased, but the reaction time was decreased to 4 h. Hence, this technique offers a simple and useful tool for enhancing enzyme activity and reducing reaction time. We have developed a pilot technique as a convenient starting point for enhancing enzyme activity of oligosaccharide production from brown sugar.Chlamydia species are causative agents of sexually transmitted infections, blinding trachoma, and animal infections with zoonotic potential. Being an obligate intracellular pathogen, Chlamydia relies on the host cell for its survival and development, subverting various host cell processes throughout the infection cycle. A key subset of host proteins utilized by Chlamydia include an assortment of host kinase signaling networks which are vital for many chlamydial processes including entry, nutrient acquisition, and suppression of host cell apoptosis. In this review, we summarize the recent advancements in our understanding of host kinase subversion by Chlamydia.The threshold of microfluidic inertial switch is excessively dependent on the size of the passive valve structure and the gas-liquid surface energy of working liquid. How to achieve high threshold and anti-high overload using liquid with low viscosity and low surface tension is a challenging work. Based on the designed U-type microfluidic inertial switch, the electrical characteristic of salt solution at microscale as well as the threshold and dynamic electrical performance of switch were studied. The VOF and CSD modules in CFD software were employed to analyze the dynamic flow process, and then the air-liquid surface moving displacement curve was compared by the theoretical model. A self-designed acceleration test platform was utilized to measure the static threshold, dynamic threshold, and anti-high overload of the inertial switch. The results show that the U-type microfluidics inertial switch using salt solution as sensitive electrode has better performance in power connection and anti-high overload. In particular, it also has the ability to achieve a range of dynamic threshold by changing the placement of the contact electrode, which can achieve rapid power on and off.Metastasis represents a major obstacle in cancer treatment and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Therefore, the identification of compounds targeting the multi-step and complex process of metastasis could improve outcomes in the management of cancer patients. Carotenoids are naturally occurring pigments with a plethora of biological activities. Carotenoids exert a potent anti-cancer capacity in various cancer models in vitro and in vivo, mediated by the modulation of signaling pathways involved in the migration and invasion of cancer cells and metastatic progression, including key regulators of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition and regulatory molecules, such as matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) and its receptor (uPAR), hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), and others. Moreover, carotenoids modulate the expression of genes associated with cancer progression and inflammatory processes as key mediators of the complex process involved in metastasis. Nevertheless, due to the predominantly preclinical nature of the known anti-tumor effects of carotenoids, and unclear results from certain carotenoids in specific cancer types and/or specific parts of the population, a precise analysis of the anti-cancer effects of carotenoids is essential. The identification of carotenoids as effective compounds targeting the complex process of cancer progression could improve the outcomes of advanced cancer patients.
Pain is the most common complication after open excisional hemorrhoidectomy (OEH). We assessed the effectiveness of polycarbophil and
lysate gel (Emorsan
Gel) on pain control after OEH.
Fifty consecutive patients undergoing OEH were included. All patients received stool softeners and oral analgesia in the post-operative period. Emorsan
Gel was also used topically by the last 25 patients (Emorsan
Gel group (EG)) until Post-Operative Day 20 (POD 20). The primary outcome was the effectiveness of Emorsan
Gel on pain relief using an 11-point visual analogue scale (VAS). Morbidity, wound healing (WH), and time to work were documented at POD 1, POD 10, POD 20, and POD 40.
Of the 50 patients enrolled, twenty-eight (56%) were males; median age, 49 (range, 28-73) years. The VAS score decreased over time in all patients, with significantly lower scores at POD 20 in the EG (1.44 (SD, 1.16) vs. 2.12 (0.93) in the control group (CG);
= 0.045). All patients in the EG achieved complete WH at last follow-up, compared to only 17 (68%) in the CG (
= 0.
