    The increased risk of CVD associated with longer duration of diabetes is similar in women and men, and thus cannot explain the higher excess risk from diabetes in women in this study population.Fifty years of evolution in infection prevention and control programs have involved significant accomplishments related to clinical practices, methodologies, and technology. However, regulatory mandates, and resource and research limitations, coupled with emerging infection threats such as the COVID-19 pandemic, present considerable challenges for infection preventionists. This article provides guidance and recommendations in 14 key areas. These interventions should be considered for implementation by United States health care facilities in the near future.Here we revisit tau protein aggregation at primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structures. In addition, the presence of non-aggregated tau protein, which has been recently discovered, is also commented on.Exposure to stressors in early postnatal life induces long-lasting modifications in brain function. This plasticity, an essential characteristic of the brain that enables adaptation to the environment, may also induce impairments in some psychophysiological functions, including learning and memory. Early life stress (ELS) has long-term effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis response to stressors, and has been reported to lead to neuroinflammation, altered levels of neurotrophic factors, modifications in neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity, with changes in neurotransmitter systems and network functioning. In this review, we focus on early postnatal stress in animal models and their effects on learning and memory. Many studies have reported ELS-induced impairments in different types of memories, including spatial memory, fear memory, recognition (both for objects and social) memory, working memory and reversal learning. Studies are not always in agreement, however, no effects, or sometimes facilitation, being reported, depending on the nature and intensity of the early intervention, as well as the age when the outcome was evaluated and the sex of the animals. When considering processes occurring after consolidation, related with memory maintenance/persistence or transformation, there are a very reduced number of reports. Future studies addressing the mechanisms underlying memory changes for ELS should shed some light on the understanding of the different effects induced by stressors of different types and intensities on cognitive functions.A series of novel chitosan/tannin/montmorillonite (Cs/Tn/MMT) films were synthesised by loading different (from 0.2 to 0.5 wt%) and MMT (from 0.5 to 1.5 wt%) ratios, to be used as promising low-cost biosorbents for methyl orange (MO) removal from aqueous media. The prepared films were characterised using different techniques such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), water contact angle, optical properties, colourimetric measurement, porosity, swelling and thickness. The effects of various parameters, i.e. initial MO concentration, adsorbent dose, pH and temperature, were studied. The Cs/Tn0.2/MMT1 film showed a high removal efficiency of 95.62% and maximum adsorption capacity of 57.37 mg/g under the optimum adsorption conditions (initial methyl orange concentration 60 mg/L, pH 7 and 25 °C). The adsorption kinetic followed the pseudo second order kinetic model and the experimental data were a good fit for the Langmuir isotherm indicating a homogeneous and monolayer adsorption process. The thermodynamic parameters suggested physical adsorption and exothermic behaviour. Consequently, Cs/Tn/MMT films showed effective potential for the uptake of anionic dyes.Transgenic crops would serve as a tool to overcome the forthcoming crisis in food security and environmental safety posed by degrading land and changing global climate. Commercial transgenic crops developed so far focus on single stress; however, sustaining crop yield to ensure food security requires transgenics tolerant to multiple environmental stresses. Here we argue and demonstrate the untapped potential of ribosome inactivating proteins (RIPs), translation inhibitors, as potential transgenes in developing transgenics to combat multiple stresses in the environment. Plant RIPs target the fundamental processes of the cell with very high specificity to the infecting pests. While controlling pathogens, RIPs also cause ectopic expression of pathogenesis-related proteins and trigger systemic acquired resistance. On the other hand, during abiotic stress, RIPs show antioxidant activity and trigger both enzyme-dependent and enzyme-independent metabolic pathways, alleviating abiotic stress such as drought, salinity, temperature, etc. RIPs express in response to specific environmental signals; therefore, their expression obviates additional physiological load on the transgenic plants instead of the constitutive expression. Based on evidence from its biological significance, ecological roles, laboratory- and controlled-environment success of its transgenics, and ethical merits, we unravel the potential of RIPs in developing transgenic plants showing co-tolerance to multiple environmental stresses.High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), a highly conserved nucleoprotein, functions in immune recognition, inflammation and antibacterial immunization in vertebrates. In the present study, the mediation mechanism of CgHMGB1 in activating MAPK and NF-κB/Rel signaling pathways to induce the expressions of immune effectors was investigated. CgHMGB1 mRNA was detected in all tested developmental stages from fertilized egg to D-larvae, with the higher expressions in 4 cells and 8 cells stages. CgHMGB1 proteins were mainly distributed in haemocyte granulocytes. The expressions of CgHMGB1 mRNA in haemocytes increased significantly after Vibrio splendidus stimulation, and CgHMGB1 protein translocated into the haemocyte cytoplasm and release into cell-free haemolymph. The phosphorylation of CgERK and CgP38 were induced, the nuclear translocation of CgRel were promoted, and the mRNA expressions of CgIL17-5 and Cgdefh2 increased significantly after rCgHMGB1 treatment. Obvious branchial swelling and cilium shedding were observed after rCgHMGB1 treatment. rCgHMGB1 exhibited binding activity to different polysaccharides, bacteria, and fungi. rCgHMGB1 also displayed obvious antibacterial activity to V. splendidus and E. coli. These results indicated that CgHMGB1 functioned as an immune recognition molecule to recognize various PAMPs and bacteria to induce the mRNA expressions of CgIL17-5 and Cgdefh2 via the activation of MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways in oysters.Lignin, as a natural polymer material, has the advantages of green safety, renewable, and pollution-free. It has a wide application prospect in the field of thermosetting. However, it has been attractive but a huge challenge to design high performance and high added-value lignin-based epoxy resin. Herein, lignin-based epoxy (LEP) was synthesized from moso bamboo-derived lignin, and then lignin-based epoxy/titanium dioxide (LEP/TiO2) hybrid nanoparticle was synthesized via liquid deposition method for modifying lignin-based epoxy resin to prepare multifunctional bio-based epoxy. The results show that the LEP/TiO2 hybrid nanoparticle exhibits a stable topological surface shape and good dispersion and uniformity. By adding 10 wt% LEP/TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles, the multifunctional bio-based epoxy exhibits good mechanical strength and toughness, and the tensile strength and fracture toughness reach 36 MPa and 1.26 MPa·m1/2, respectively. In addition, the thermal stability, UV absorption and antibacterial properties of the multifunctional bio-based epoxy are further improved. This study provides a facile and efficient method for the preparation of high-performance multifunctional bio-based epoxy composite and a novel solution for the utilization of lignin.Lightweight and biodegradable polymer composites with efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance are of great significance for controlling pollution caused by plastic waste and electromagnetic radiation. Herein, poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composites were prepared through a melt blending method. By adding a small amount of poly(D-lactic acid) to poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), the EMI shielding performance of the composites was improved because an enhanced viscoelasticity and suitable crystallinity could help to construct fine CNT conductive networks. When the PDLA content was 2 wt%, the EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of the PLLA-2PDLA-10CNTs reached 27.1 dB at 26.5 GHz. Based on these findings, a green supercritical CO2 foaming method was employed to prepare lightweight PLLA/PDLA/CNTs composites. For the PLLA-2PDLA-10CNTs foams, when the expansion ratio was 1.24, the EMI SE was 20.1 dB at 26.5 GHz. In addition, the EMI shielding mechanism of the foams was dominated by absorption. This paper provides a facile way to prepare lightweight and environmentally friendly materials for EMI shielding applications.

    Mirizzi’s Syndrome (MS) is a rare pathology, known to be a challenge for the surgeon. In the surgical management, open approach vs laparoscopic is a topic of discussion due to anatomic variations. The aim of this study is to analyze our experience in the laparoscopic management of this condition in Type Va.

    We made a descriptive retrospective study of patients diagnosed with MS type Va and treated by laparoscopic approach from 2014 to 2019, in two high volume centers of Bogotá, Colombia.

    1073 patients who presented complications from gallstones were evaluated, of which 16 were diagnosed with MS type Va. 75% were females and 25% males; 80% presented jaundice and 90% abdominal pain; 12 patients showed cholecystoduodenal fistula and 4 cholecystocolic fistula. All patients underwent laparoscopic management, total cholecystectomy and fistula resection with primary closure was possible on a 100% of the patients. Conversion rate was 0%. The follow up was 18 months.

It has the advantage of removing the mass, suturing, and achieving satisfactory haemostasis in a single step.Elastography researchers have utilized several rheological models to characterize soft tissue viscoelasticity over the past thirty years. Due to the frequency-dependent behavior of viscoelastic parameters as well as the different techniques and frequencies employed in various studies of soft tissues, rheological models have value in standardizing disparate techniques via explicit mathematical representations. However, the important question remains which of the several available models should be considered for widespread adoption within a theoretical framework? We address this by evaluating the performance of three well established rheological models to characterize ex vivo bovine liver tissues the Kelvin-Voigt (KV) model as a 2-parameter model, and the standard linear solid (SLS) and Kelvin-Voigt fractional derivative (KVFD) models as 3-parameter models. The assessments were based on the analysis of time domain behavior (using stress relaxation tests) and frequency domain behavior (by measuring shear wave speed (SWS) dispersion).
