Interleukins (ILs)-which are important members of cytokines-consist of a vast group of molecules, including a wide range of immune mediators that contribute to the immunological responses of many cells and tissues. ILs are immune-glycoproteins, which directly contribute to the growth, activation, adhesion, differentiation, migration, proliferation, and maturation of immune cells; and subsequently, they are involved in the pro and anti-inflammatory responses of the body, by their interaction with a wide range of receptors. Due to the importance of immune system in different organisms, the genes belonging to immune elements, such as ILs, have been studied vigorously. The results of recent investigations showed that the genes pertaining to the immune system undergo progressive evolution with a constant rate. The occurrence of any mutation or polymorphism in IL genes may result in substantial changes in their biology and function and may be associated with a wide range of diseases and disorders. Among these abnormalities, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) can represent as important disruptive factors. The present review aims at concisely summarizing the current knowledge available on the occurrence, properties, role, and biological consequences of SNPs within the IL-1 family members.Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a subtype of chronic rhinosinusitis characterized by high edema in the stroma, albumin deposition, and formation of pseudocysts. The pathogenesis of CRSwNP is not yet fully understood. Regulatory T (Treg) cells are a subset of CD4+ T cells that play a suppressive immunoregulatory role in the process of CRSwNP. Recent studies have found that there was a significant reduction in Treg cells in polyp tissues, which leads to the onset of CRSwNP. An imbalance between Th17 and Treg cells can also aggravate inflammation toward the Th2 type. This review focuses on our understanding of the function and role of Treg cells and their regulatory factors and clinical significance in CRSwNP. We also summarize the current drug treatments for CRSwNP with Tregs as the potential therapeutic target, which will provide new ideas for the treatment of CRSwNP in the future. There is a concern that the widespread deployment of autonomous machines will open up a number of 'responsibility gaps’ throughout society. Various articulations of such techno-responsibility gaps have been proposed over the years, along with several potential solutions. Most of these solutions focus on 'plugging’ or 'dissolving’ the gaps. This paper offers an alternative perspective. It argues that techno-responsibility gaps are, sometimes, to be welcomed and that one of the advantages of autonomous machines is that they enable us to embrace certain kinds of responsibility gap. The argument is based on the idea that human morality is often tragic. We frequently confront situations in which competing moral considerations pull in different directions and it is impossible to perfectly balance these considerations. This heightens the burden of responsibility associated with our choices. We cope with the tragedy of moral choice in different ways. Sometimes we delude ourselves into thinking the choices we make were not tragic (illusionism); sometimes we delegate the tragic choice to others (delegation); sometimes we make the choice ourselves and bear the psychological consequences (responsibilisation). Each of these strategies has its benefits and costs. One potential advantage of autonomous machines is that they enable a reduced cost form of delegation. However, we only gain the advantage of this reduced cost if we accept that some techno-responsibility gaps are virtuous. Some artificial intelligence (AI) systems can display algorithmic bias, i.e. they may produce outputs that unfairly discriminate against people based on their social identity. Much research on this topic focuses on algorithmic bias that disadvantages people based on their gender or racial identity. The related ethical problems are significant and well known. Algorithmic bias against other aspects of people’s social identity, for instance, their political orientation, remains largely unexplored. This paper argues that algorithmic bias against people’s political orientation can arise in some of the same ways in which algorithmic gender and racial biases emerge. However, it differs importantly from them because there are (in a democratic society) strong social norms against gender and racial biases. This does not hold to the same extent for political biases. Political biases can thus more powerfully influence people, which increases the chances that these biases become embedded in algorithms and makes algorithmic political biases harder to detect and eradicate than gender and racial biases even though they all can produce similar harm. Since some algorithms can now also easily identify people’s political orientations against their will, these problems are exacerbated. Algorithmic political bias thus raises substantial and distinctive risks that the AI community should be aware of and examine.

Ocular adverse events have been reported in association with dupilumab, a monoclonal antibody to treat allergic diseases including atopic dermatitis (AD). We describe clinical findings and treatment of dupilumab-related ocular complications.

Retrospective study of 19 dupilumab-treated AD patients seen for a new ocular complaint. Primary outcomes were specific ocular exam findings (conjunctival injection, corneal fluorescein staining, blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)), treatments, and follow-up.

Nineteen dupilumab-treated AD patients were included. Median age was 47 years (range 18-73). Over half were women (11/19) and majority were Caucasian (13/19). Symptom onset occurred at a mean of 99 days (range 23-520 days) from first dupilumab dose. The most common symptoms were redness (63%), tearing (47%), and pruritus (37%). Most common ocular findings were conjunctival injection (75%) and corneal staining (60%). Blepharitis was seen in about a third (30%), and 25% had MGD. Initially, 10% were obadequate control of ocular symptoms.

Conjunctival injection was the most frequent dupilumab-related ocular symptom and most common exam finding followed by corneal staining. Most patients initially treated with antihistamine drops or artificial tears alone subsequently required steroid drops to control symptoms. Some patients who discontinued dupilumab restarted the medication after achieving adequate control of ocular symptoms.

Accurate interpretation of lung function tests requires appropriate spirometry reference values derived from large-scale population-specific epidemiological surveys. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to establish normal spirometric values for the population of healthy, nonsmoking Han Chinese adults residing in Zhejiang province, China.

We measured lung function parameters such as forced expiratory volume in 1 s, forced vital capacity, peak expiratory flow, maximal midexpiratory flow, and diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide and considered age, height, and weight as independent factors that may modify these parameters. The clinical data were divided into the study arm and validation group. The study arms were used to construct predictive equations using stepwise multiple linear regression, and data from the validation group were used to assess the robustness of the equations.

The 3866 participants were randomized into a study arm (

     = 1,949) and a validation arm (

= 1,917). Lung function parameters had a negative association with age and a positive association with height. Data from the two groups were similar. Predictive equations were constructed from the study arm, and the validation group was used to test the feasibility of the reference equations.

The reference values we derived can be used to evaluate lung function in this cohort in both epidemiological studies and clinical practice.

The aim of our study was to evaluate the potential of expression and single nucleotide polymorphism of Acyl-CoA binding domain containing 4 (ACBD4) gene as prognosis biomarkers in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after hepatectomy.

HBV-related HCC patients from the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University and GSE14520 were included in the current study, as well as The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) HCC verification cohort. Prognostic analysis and multiple functional enrichment analysis methods were used to evaluate the prognostic value and potential biological functions of the ACBD4 gene in HBV-related HCC.

We found that ACBD4 gene is highly expressed in normal liver tissues and markedly down-regulated in HBV-related HCC tissues. ACBD4 gene was significantly related to overall survival (OS) of HCC in TCGA and GSE14520 cohorts, and patients with low ACBD4 expression were markedly related to poor OS. Rs4986172 was observed as an OS biomarker after hep HBV-related HCC patients after hepatectomy.

A decline in sports activities among children and adolescents was noted during the stay-at-home restrictions imposed by COVID-19. With the easing of restrictions, physical activities are being resumed.

A data search was conducted to identify the role of parents in resuming sporting activities, the risks and benefits of doing so, the physical examination to be conducted prior to physical activity, the existence of guidelines/protocols for return to sports and physical activity, the role of comorbidities in influencing the restart of the same.

Parents should consult the child’s physician prior to allowing he/she to resume physical exercise. In preparation for this, a careful physical examination should be performed. Children with COVID-19, even if asymptomatic, should not resume any physical activity until at least 10days after testing positive. Those with moderate or severe COVID-19 should be referred for cardiological evaluation. The level of activity should be resumed gradually, as per the GRTP protocol. Athletes with a positive COVID-19 test in the presence of concomitant medical conditions (diabetes, cardiovascular or respiratory or renal disease) should undergo medical evaluation prior to adhering to a GRTP. Those with complicated COVID19 infection or long Covid may need additional investigations.

While there is no doubt that it will bring multiple benefits in terms of general health, returning to play sport should be gradual and preceded by an accurate physical examination in those young subjects previously affected by the coronavirus disease, especially when their heart and/or lungs and/or kidneys were affected.

Our interest in this country pair is driven by the two countries’ interwoven history as well as by the fact that Belarus remains autocratic and strongly tied to Russia, while Lithuania has reinvented herself as a democratic market economy fully integrated into the EU. Our aim is to understand better the extent to which the growth differential between the two countries can be traced to increased efficiency, i.e., total factor productivity, in the use of capital and other resources via, inter alia, better institutions (intensive growth) as opposed to sheer accumulation of capital (extensive growth), the hallmark of Soviet economic growth. To this end, we compare the development of some key determinants of growth in the two countries since the 1990s. Employing a simple growth accounting model we find that institutional reforms, open and transparent governance, and good education play a more important role for output and efficiency than crude capital accumulation.
