    The ScaI restriction site is present in all known oncogenic JSRVs but absent in ovine endogenous retroviruses, while the „LHMKYXXM” motif is in all known exJSRVs but not in enJSRVs. Interestingly, one JSRV strain (HH13) from Heilongjiang province contained the „LHMKYXXM” motif but not the ScaI enzyme site. Phylogenetic analysis showed that strain HH13 was closely related to strain enJSRV-21 reported in the USA, indicating that HH13 could be an exogenous virus. Our results provide valuable information for further research on the genetic evolution and pathogenesis of JSRV.Enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) is a malignant B-cell lymphoma of cattle caused by infection with bovine leukemia virus (BLV). It is defined by clonal and neoplastic expansion of BLV-infected B cells. Currently, multiple examinations are able to comprehensively diagnose this condition. Inverse polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a useful method to determine retrovirus integration sites. Here, we established a simplified inverse PCR method, involving the evaluation of clonality and similarity of BLV integration sites, to clinically diagnose EBL, and we also assessed its reliability. We found that the novel BLV inverse PCR could detect clonal expansion of infected cells even if they constituted only 5% of the total number of cells, while not amplifying any fragments from BLV-uninfected cells, thus confirming its sufficient sensitivity and specificity for use in EBL diagnosis. Furthermore, 50 clinical cases of bovine leukemia were analyzed using BLV inverse PCR and other PCR-based methods, wherein our method most efficiently determined virus-dependent bovine leukemia, including unidentified clinical cases observed in a previous report. Following further clinical investigations to enhance its reliability, the proposed BLV inverse PCR method has the potential to be applied to EBL diagnosis.The aim of this study was to describe the distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes among cervical cancers and pre-cancers in Shaanxi province of western China. A total of 17,341 women who were screened for cervical cancer from January 2014 to December 2016, using HPV genotyping and ThinPrep cytologic test were included. The prevalence and attribution of HPV genotypes were stratified by cervical lesion and age group. Of the subjects, 26.3% were infected with HPV, 28.0% of whom had multiple infections. The crude HPV prevalence increased from atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance/low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (ASCUS/LSIL, 64.3%) to high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL, 79.8%) and to invasive cervical cancer (ICC, 89.7%, P less then 0.001). The three most prevalent genotypes were HPV 16 (8.0%), 58 (4.2%), and 52 (4.0%), and HPV 16, 31 and 33 were positively correlated with increased severity of cervical lesions. Additionally, the divalent vaccine genotypes HPV 16 and 18 accounted for 68.2% of ICC cases. Although 78.5% of ICC and 60.3% of HSIL cases were attributed to 9-valent vaccine genotypes, the other genotypes not covered by any vaccine still resulted in increases in coverage, with 1.5% for ICC, 5.3% for HSIL, and 13.5% for ASCUS/LSIL. HPV prevalence in western China was consistent with other regions of China. Early vaccination with 9-valent HPV vaccine is recommended in this locality for females younger than 26 years with no prior infection, while divalent the vaccine is more appropriate for women between 26 and 45 years, considering the efficacy, safety and cost-effectiveness of vaccines.Replication of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is regulated by various host mechanisms, but the role of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway in regulating NDV replication is an open question. In this study, the relationship between the ERK pathway and NDV replication was investigated. NDV activated the ERK signaling in chicken embryo fibroblasts at the late stage of infection, correlating to expression of viral proteins. Specific blockage of the ERK pathway activation significantly decreased the transcription and translation levels of viral genes as well as virus replication and the cytopathogenic effect caused by NDV. Our results demonstrate that activation of the ERK pathway is required for NDV replication.Deinococcus indicus is a novel bacteria isolated from West Bengal, India known for its UV radiation and heavy metal tolerance. Since, this organism is reported from a region known for heavy metal contamination and earlier investigations demonstrated its radiation resistance, our study focused on the multiple stress responsive and DNA repair mechanisms. Though, most of the members of the genus Deinococcus are Gram positive cocci, D. indicus postures Gram negative rod shaped cells. Hence, the objectives were framed precisely to understand DNA repair pathway and stress responsive genes expression with a broader perspective. Based on available whole genome sequence of D. indicus, quantitative real time PCR (qPCR) was done to determine the expression pattern of multiple stress responsive genes upon various environmental extremities. Among them, UV responsive genes like UvrD and UvsE showed elevated expression when subjected to UV-C radiation at different time intervals. Similarly, when supplemented with arsenic and chromium, ArsR and ArsB exhibited considerably higher level of expression. While all the genes were subsequently analyzed in-silico, depicted that most of them were with N-glycosylation site, GPI anchor sites, N-terminal trans-membrane helix region besides putative signal peptides. Overall, this study opined the functional information on stress tolerance genes that aid to understand the DNA damage recovery mechanism towards elucidation of DNA repair pathways.

    Knowledge on the factors affecting the correction rate (CR) aids in the surgical planning among severe idiopathic scoliosis (IS) patients. This study aimed to investigate the independent factors affecting CR among patients with severe IS (Cobb angle ≥ 90°) who underwent single-staged posterior spinal fusion (PSF).

    We retrospectively reviewed 128 severe IS patients who underwent single-staged PSF. Factors including age, height, weight, body mass index, Risser sign, Lenke subtypes, preoperative major Cobb angle, side bending major Cobb angle, side bending flexibility (SBF), motion segments of the major curve, AR curve, number of levels fused, screw density, operative time and postoperative major Cobb angle were analysed using linear regression analysis.

    The mean age was 15.5 ± 4.5years with mean Risser sign of 3.1 ± 1.6. The mean preoperative Cobb, SBF, postoperative Cobb and CR were 102.8 ± 12.3°, 37.5 ± 13.7%, 44.4 ± 13.5° and 57.2 ± 10.8%, respectively. From stepwise multiple linear regression analysis, SBF, Risser sign and AR curve were the independent predictive factors for CR, with R

    value of 0.345 (p < 0.001). CR can be predicted using the formula 47.21 + (0.34 × SBF)-(1.47 × Risser sign) + (3.69 × AR), where AR = 1 and non-AR = 0.

Important and well-established pathophysiological concepts are the impairment of sensorimotor integration, a loss of inhibitory control on several levels of the central nervous system and changes in synaptic plasticity. These mechanisms collectively contribute to an impairment of the gating function of the basal ganglia which results in an insufficient suppression of noisy activity and an excessive activation of cortical areas. In addition to this traditional view, a plethora of animal, genetic, imaging and electrophysiological studies highlight the role of the (1) cerebellum, (2) the cerebello-thalamic connection and (3) the functional interplay between basal ganglia and the cerebellum in the pathophysiology of dystonia. Another emerging topic is the better understanding of the microarchitecture of the striatum and its implications for dystonia. The striosomes are of particular interest as they likely control the dopamine release via inhibitory striato-nigral projections. Striosomal dysfunction has been implicated in hyperkinetic movement disorders including dystonia. This review will provide a comprehensive overview about the current understanding of the functional neuroanatomy and pathophysiology of dystonia and aims to move the traditional view of a 'basal ganglia disorder’ to a network perspective with a dynamic interplay between cortex, basal ganglia, thalamus, brainstem and cerebellum.

    Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has quickly turned into a global pandemic with close to 5 million cases and more than 320,000 deaths. Cancer patients constitute a group that is expected to be at risk and poor prognosis in COVID pandemic. We aimed to investigate how cancer patients are affected by COVID-19 infection, its clinical course and the factors affecting mortality.

    In our single-center retrospective study, we included cancer patients with laboratory confirmed COVID-19 in our hospital. Demographic, clinical, treatment, and laboratory data were obtained from electronic medical records. Logistic regression methods were used to investigate risk factors associated with in-hospital death.

    In the hospital, 4489 patients were hospitalized with COVID infection and 77 were cancer patients. The mean age of cancer patients was 61.9 ± 10.9 and 44 of them were male (62%). While the mortality rate in non-cancer patients was 1.51% (n = 68), this rate was significantly higher in cancer patients, 23.9% (n = 17). The stage of the disease, receiving chemotherapy in the last 30days also lymphopenia, elevated troponin I, D-dimer, CRP, and CT findings were associated with severe disease and mortality. Severe lung involvement (OR = 22.9, p = 0.01) and lymphopenia (OR = 0.99, p = 0.04) are the most important factors influencing survival in logistic regression.

    The disease is more severe in cancer patients and mortality is significantly higher than non-cancer patients. These data show that it may be beneficial to develop dynamic prevention, early diagnosis and treatment strategies for this vulnerable group of patients who are affected by the infection so much.

    We clarified the safety and efficacy of preoperative chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced rectal cancer using a multidrug regimen (S-1 + oxaliplatin + bevacizumab).

    This multicenter phase II trial involved 47 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer. All patients received S-1 orally (80mg/m

    /day on days 1-5, 8-12, 15-19, and 22-26) and infusions of oxaliplatin (50mg/m

    on days 1, 8, 15, and 22) and bevacizumab (5mg/kg on days 1 and 15). The total radiation dose was 40Gy delivered in daily fractions of 2Gy via the four-field technique. The primary endpoint was the pathological complete response rate. The secondary endpoints were safety (incidence of adverse events) and clinical response, relapse-free survival, overall survival, local recurrence, R0 resection, downstaging, and treatment completion rates.

    All 47 patients received chemoradiotherapy, and 44 patients underwent curative resection. Two patients refused surgery and selected a watch-and-wait strategy. The pathological complete response rate was 18.
