To develop a new method to test the fracture strength of endodontically-treated root dentin.

Bovine tooth roots were transversely cut into 2-mm thick sections and the root canals were enlarged with a taper of 0.06. An outer layer of resin composite was bonded to each section to make the root canal-to-outer radius ratio smaller than 1/3. The resulting discs were treated with irrigants at the inner surface and then fractured by inserting through the center a steel rod of the same taper attached to a universal test system. Fracture strength was calculated by using Lame’s equations for thick-walled cylinders. Micro-indentation was performed to evaluate the depth of dentin affected by irrigation. Finite element analysis (FEA) was performed to verify the reasonableness of using resin composite to surround the dentin section as well as the analytical solution.

The fracture strength of endodontically-treated root dentin based on the analytical solution for a homogeneous section was 139.69 ± 32.59 MPa. However, FEA that took into account root canal softening caused by the irrigants showed that this was overestimated by about 33.5%. The corrected fracture strength of treated dentin was 114.58 ± 26.74 MPa. By incorporating the layer of affected dentin into the analytical solution, the difference in the fracture-causing stress between the analytical and numerical solutions dropped to around 9.5%.

A relatively simple but clinically relevant method has been developed for measuring the fracture strength of endodontically-treated root dentin. The method could be applied to root dentin that is treated by conventional canal opening and irrigation.

The early symptoms of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) are not obvious, and it is difficult to make early diagnosis. A case-control study was conducted to identify potential biomarkers and established a diagnosis model for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Plasma samples of 131 cases of NPC and 132 cases of healthy individuals were incubated with the Ray Biotech Human Lung Cancer IgG Autoantibody Detection Array G1, and signal values were used to develop a risk prediction model for NPC diagnosis.

Of the 30 autoantibodies, high expression of MAGE-A4, NY-ESO-1, HuD, Survivin, IMDH2, Ubiquilin-1, IMP1, PGP9.5, IMP3, C-Myc and low expression of Cyclin B1 were potential biomarkers for NPC diagnosis (p <0.05), among which Survivin, MAGE-A4 and IMP3 shows higher AUC of 0.674, 0.652 and 0.650 respectively, the specificity of them was 89.39% (95% CI 82.85-94.08%), 90.15% (95% CI 83.75-94.65%) and 88.64% (81.95-93.50%).The risk probability analysis for NPC diagnosis based on the panel of Cyclin B1, NY-ESO-1, Survivin, and IMP3 displayed the best diagnosis performance with an AUC of 0.779, p (Yi = 1) = 1/(1+EXP[8.316+1.672*CyclinB1-1.152*NY-ESO-1-2.052*Survivin-0.950*IMP3]), the specificity of that was 86.36% (95% CI 79.31-91.71%).

Our findings demonstrated that the panel of Cyclin B1, NY-ESO-1, Survivin, and IMP3 has a good performance in the detection of NPC, and all 11 autoantibodies may also have a certain significance for the prognosis of NPC.

Smoking cessation can be successfully accomplished through specific programs, including behaviour modification and medications, and has been suggested as a suitable way to reduce the risk of several diseases, including periodontitis. The aim of this review is to provide a concise overview of the current knowledge about the impact of smoking cessation on periodontal tissues and therapy, with data from studies published in the last 15 years. Literature was searched using Medline database from 2005 up to and including September 2020 using medical subject heading (MeSH) terms and other search terms, restricted to the English language. Studies were evaluated and summarised in a narrative review format. Results demonstrated that there is convincing evidence to support the benefits of tobacco cessation in reducing the risk of periodontitis and tooth loss. In addition, the harmful effects of smoking on periodontal tissues seem to be assuaged as the number of years since quitting increases. The existing current evidence, even limited, also shows that smoking cessation may result in additional benefits to the outcome of nonsurgical periodontal treatment. Periodontal care providers should not only check their patient’s smoking habit for estimating risk of disease progression and predictability of periodontal therapy, but they should also help smokers improve their oral and systemic health by providing efficient and personalised tobacco-cessation counselling and treatment.

Untreated dental caries is the most frequent childhood chronic disease worldwide. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) offers a safe and effective alternative treatment, especially for children.

To inform the dental community about the efficacy of SDF in community dental caries programs and to advocate for its use as an affordable and equitable approach to promote health and well-being within the dental setting.

A summary of the literature shared during a webinar about the use and efficacy of SDF in community dental programs hosted by the Oral Health Working Group of the World Federation of Public Health Associations RESULTS Based on the traditional „drill-and-fill” approach, the current treatment for severe caries is associated with pain, fear, and poor oral health outcomes in later life. Innovative approaches to prevent and control caries are needed. SDF offers an alternative treatment option for caries. It is a practical, affordable, and acceptable option for caries treatment, eliminating the need for general anaesthetic in young children, and improving long-term oral health outcomes.

SDF can improve oral health outcomes for community members, especially for individuals from low-socioeconomic settings.

Using sibling data collected over time, we investigate how learning in school, measured by achievement test scores, affects adolescents’ views on gender issues both with and without direct implications for women’s economic mobility. With fixed-effects models accounting for unobserved heterogeneity between high and low achievers, we show that the relationship between academic achievement and gender ideology is not spurious, but learning does not enlighten adolescents on all gender-related beliefs, either. Rather, school learning socializes both boys and girls into more liberal views on issues clearly related to women’s economic opportunities. For views concerning dating practices or boy-girl interactions, which are irrelevant to the meritocracy-based mainstream values, academic performance has less consistent effects, with higher achievement scores sometimes associated with more conservative views among boys. Our results generally support the socialization and reproduction model of the role of school learning, although self-interest also explains high and low achievers’ different attitudes on dating and other personal-realm gender practices.Public debates portray Arab Muslims as universally opposed to homosexuality due to Islam. Those Orientalist claims are mirrored by large-scale studies that argue Muslims oppose homosexuality more than non-Muslims. We argue that assuming religion and opposition to homosexuality are unidimensional concepts obscures how they relate to each other and why; we study both „religiosity” and „opposition to homosexuality” multidimensionally. WVS data on 9000 Arab Muslims show, first, that although most respondents reject both homosexuality and homosexuals, one in five reject homosexuality but do not object to having homosexual neighbors. A substantial minority of Arab Muslims thus „hate the sin but love the sinner”. Multilevel analyses show that stronger religious attachment increases opposition to homosexuality and homosexual people. However, all other dimensions of religiosity we study (textualism, mosque attendance, and altruism) also reduce some oppositions. Consequently, the argument that Arab Muslims’ religiosity only leads to opposition to homosexuality is too simplistic.Social scientists have long been interested in questions of organizational culpability, workers’ rights, and workplace equity. This study focuses on a particularly important aspect of managerial practice-financial transparency-and its implications for job-related distress. Drawing on 2011 British Workplace Employment Relations Survey data, we interrogate the transparency-distress relationship and whether it is mediated or moderated by other organizational dynamics, such as managerial relations. Our hierarchical analyses of nearly 20,000 workers across over 2,000 workplace establishments reveal that managerial communication and trust surrounding organizational financial transparency reduces job distress-an ameliorating effect that is both markedly robust and stronger in firms with limited collective bargaining coverage. Positive supervisory appraisals serve as a major mechanism underlying this relationship, with job security and organizational commitment playing a more moderate role. We conclude by highlighting our core findings in these regards and especially the centrality of social-interactional factors above and beyond monetary considerations. The US has experienced a substantial decline in social trust in recent decades. Surprisingly few studies analyze whether individual-level explanations can account for this decrease. We use three-wave panel data from the General Social Survey (2006-2014) to study the effects of four possible individual-level sources of changes in social trust job loss, social ties, income, and confidence in political institutions. Findings from fixed-effects linear regression models suggest that all but social ties matter. We then use 1973-2018 GSS data to predict trust based on observed values for unemployment, confidence in institutions, and satisfaction with income, versus an alternative counterfactual scenario in which the values of those three predictors are held constant at their mean levels in the early 1970s. Predicted values from these two scenarios differ substantially, suggesting that decreasing confidence in institutions and increasing unemployment scarring may explain about half of the observed decline in US social trust. Most online market exchanges are governed by reputation systems, which allow traders to comment on one another’s behavior and attributes with ratings and text messages. These ratings then constitute sellers’ reputations that serve as signals of their trustworthiness and competence. The large body of research investigating the effect of reputation on selling performance has produced mixed results, and there is a lack of consensus on whether the reputation effect exists and what it means. After showing how the reputation effect can be derived from a game-theoretic model, we use meta-analysis to synthesize evidence from 107 studies investigating the reputation effect in peer-to-peer online markets. Our results corroborate the existence of the reputation effect across different operationalizations of seller reputation and selling performance. Our results also show the extent to which the reputation effect varies. We discuss potential explanations for the variation in reputation effects that cannot be attributed to sampling error and thereby point out promising avenues for future research.
